ff 6 month old refusing bottle

jadey24 · 18/01/2009 20:29

My ff dd has always been a fussy milk drinker since day one but at first it neva affected her weight gain now she has had slow weight gain for the past couple months and on instruction of hv i was adviced to start weaning coz she was dropping a lot on the chart which i did but she is still dropping.

Anyway in the last couple of weeks she has decreased her amount to 4-5 ozs & that is a battle of 2 hours with her to get her to have that much BUT now she cries soon as bottle goes in her mouth. She will only have an 0z or 2 at the most nw. She takes more solids but as decreased that too.
She has been really whiney and fussy.
Im sure she is teething coz she keeps biting the bottle teat and her dummy in the last couple weeks.
I have tried teething jel and ashton and parson powders but makes no difference.

She has a cold too but was checked out by doctor last week and she wasnt concerned coz it isnt on her chest and her breathing isnt effected. She has had the cough part of the cold for nearly 2 weeks now and the snuffles for a good month or more.

She has started sleeping a lot more so getting worried she is ill even tho she is being sick or anthing.

She keeps shaking her head from side to side too a lot but isnt pulling her ears or anything

Can anyone offer advice or shed any light on this behaviour

thx

my ds was just like this too, i tried everything, infant gaviscon, bonjella, calpol before a feed i even resorted to crusha.
the only thing that eventually worked was switching formula brand and using different bottles, we were using avent but he likes tommee tippee ones much better.

jadey24 · 18/01/2009 20:34

Ive just changed her milk brand again 2 days ago for the 4th 5th time and she has had different bottles too.

are you getting wound up and stressed about it? i found that i was and that made feeding much worse. how does she feed if other people do it?

jadey24 · 18/01/2009 20:39

I am stressed coz she has had bad weight gain so i feel under a lot of pressure to get her to eat etc. She was born on the 75th and is now on the 25th line. She is 6 months yet hasnt even doubled her birth weight yet.
She is like it when anyone feeds her.

ive just noticed you wrote you are taking 2 hours to get a bottle down sometimes. i would try to stop that as it just adds to the stress, make up smaller bottles and offer little but often.

bamboobutton · 18/01/2009 20:42

really really try to relax and let her say how much she wants, i was just like you and was getting so stressed about it. i had to really force myself to relax.

sometimes ds would only have half an oz a day so i know how stressfull it can be.

jadey24 · 18/01/2009 20:50

Im just worried she will fade away. I really want to follow her lead im just scared too coz im worried she wont take anything

have you tried a cup? maybe she will take some from a doidy cup, or even a tommee tippee or similar with a spout.

bamboobutton · 18/01/2009 20:57

she won't fade away, babies won't starve themselves.

what kind of weaning food are you giving her? make baby porridges using formula, i added clotted cream as well but im not sure if thats good for 6months old, add formula to anything you make if possible.

and most of all relaaaax! sing songs etc. once i relaxed he started taking his bottles alot better. he's 11m now and takes 3 7oz bottles aday, unheard of 5moths ago!

when other people feed her are you in the room or do you go out into another room?

bamboobutton · 18/01/2009 21:12

im signing off now, i hope you have better luck with feeding tomorrow

I have had this on and off with my LO since he was 8 weeks and it's really hard when every feed ends up with both of you in tears. We saw a paedeatrician who prescribed Ranitadine incase it was silent reflux but I don't think it has really done much.
I got so stressed out about it, he went from 91st to just below 50th and at 6 months hasn't quite doubled his birth weight (he was 9lb 3oz at birth though so has some reserves!).
But I have just come to accept it's how he is, he just isn't that fussed by food and I can't force feed him. He will have days/weeks where he's really hungry and puts on weight so I just enjoy them, then he'll have days of taking less than 10oz but I just offer him the bottle, sing little songs and if he only takes 1oz so be it. He's also the type of baby who if feeling ill or tired will just not eat, whatever I try!!!
It is really difficult when you have a bad feeder but babies will not starve themselves, they will take what they need - my LO is developing perfectly in all other ways, rolling, sitting, trying to crawl etc so I'm reassured by that.
Have you had her length and head circumference measured? I had that and my LO was following the same centile as birth so I think that's a better way to check he's growing, he's just long and lean like his Daddy!
Agree with the other posters about getting as much milk into her food as possible, I put a slog of it into everything so even if he doesn't drink much I know he's got something.
Just keep telling yourself 'it's just a phase, it won't last forever' and have a big gin and tonic when she's gone to bed

Hi everyone.

Well she still same lol. I wouldnt of worried so much if it wasnt for the hv pointing it out and she wasnt very helpful.

She is happy and smiley and chatty, sleeps through the night no problem just isnt into her food much.

Im am gonna ring me other hv who is nicer just to make her aware of it incase she moans later on at me for not saying anything.

I really do think she is teething tho coz her cheeks have really come out bright red today and she keeps biting the dummy and pulling in and out her mouth to bite it.

She hasnt had her head or lengh measured by hv since she was born but i measure her lengh and she is putting inches on ok imp.

I havent tried her on a cup coz i thought that was when they have teeth and can hold themselves up which she has no teeth and isnt sitting up yet.

hi jadey, how is DDs feeding going?

i wouldn't really listen to HVs, the best gauge is your own instinct. you say she is happy and smiley so she sounds fine.
