Thrush?

My 4 month old boy has been fussing at the breast for a few days now and screams in pain, arches his back and pulls away, sometimes refusing to feed at all. He seems really hungry though. He is occasionally waking at night screaming and hard to settle especially during the day, but at other times he is in great form which makes me doubt he's actaully ill. He does seem particularly windy at the moment. Today I have a sharp pain in my left breast - could we have thrush, does anyone have experience of this? or any suggestions what else might be bothering my son after months of succesful happy breastfeeding?! thanks

Hi Motherboke, I have suffered from thrush whilst bf all 3 of my children. Unfortunatly it is really hard so get a diagnosis of thrush and seems to be more of a process of elimination rather than a simple diagnosis.

I would personally go to a lactation consultant/breast feeding advisor if you know one who is good. Failing that ring the the breast feeding network, they can put you in contact with the information you need. if you click the link below it will take you to the thrush/breastfeeding part of the site - there is a leaflet which you can download to wave at your gp if that is what it is - gps never want to give the full dose of the meds but its necessary to get rid of it, it also gives a good description of the symptoms. Their number is on the site.

good luck and don't give up!!
