How often does your baby (breast) feed?

Merely curious as I'm not going to start withholding milk on grounds that it's too frequent! DD1 feed every three hours max during day and then once during the night, DD2 who is 13 weeks will often feed every one and a half to two hours during the day and varies between one and three feeds during the night - she is content and dead on fiftieth percentile so not worried about her but just feel she does feed quite often!

ds3 is 10 weeks and feeds about every 1.30 to 2 hours during the day with a larger gap in the middle of the day of about 3 hours. I give him his dream feed at 10pm and he will go through to 4 then feed again and through to about 7.
ds1 and 2 were the same from what I remember

TreeTrunkThighs · 14/01/2009 12:41

Sounds the same as both my dds at that age

Don't know if that makes it normal or not! They both went longer between feeds eventually - once we had fallen into a nap routine actually, probably around four months after the 16 week growth spurt. HTH

IAteMakkaPakka · 14/01/2009 12:44

Totally normal Sprogster, IME anyway. It does settle down to a less frequent pattern after a while

MamacitaGordita · 14/01/2009 12:56

Sounds the same as my DS Sprogster- it is often but I just look at his little chubby thighs and that's where it's going!

roomforthree · 14/01/2009 12:56

My 3 have all been different! DS1 would feed every 2 hours or so during the day, and had 2 or 3 feeds overnight. DD fed every hour, night and day, until we started blw at 6 months. DS2, 10 weeks, feeds every 3 hours or so during the day, then sleeps for 7 hours overnight.

moonincancer · 14/01/2009 17:56

roomforthree.

my 9 wk ds feeds every twoish hours. fours the longest time hes gone. its normal

belgo · 14/01/2009 17:59

sprogstersmum - your dd2 has an identical feeding pattern to my ds who is also aged 13 weeks - and I consider it quite a good feeding pattern because my previous babies have fed hourly during the day and often every two hours for most of the night.

I wouldn't try and change it, you're only risking more night feeds.

MrsTittleMouse · 14/01/2009 18:02

Sounds like both of my DDs. I don't bother logging or even noticing how often it is - it would be too depressing!

chandellina · 14/01/2009 18:11

my 24 week old feeds anything from 7 to 12 times within 24 hours. I dont' think he's very normal though! (has never slept through, or anywhere near sleeping through)

MrsHD · 14/01/2009 18:56

DS feeds very frequently, every hour if he's awake and if he's had a long sleep in the day (3 hours or so) he'll really make up for lost time afterwards. DD fed every three hours day and night much of the time so this has come as a shock!

fledtoscotland · 22/01/2009 20:44

thanks chandellina - this post makes me feel normal. DS2 is 22weeks old and would feed 24/7 given the chance. realistically he feeds every 3hrs during the day, massive cluster feed between 7pm and 9pm, and then just helps himself overnight (we co-sleep).

thisisyesterday · 22/01/2009 20:46

sprogster... sounds totally nromal! your baby knows when she is hungry... you need to let her feed.

ds2 fed at LEAST 2 hourly, it was actually usually more like every 45 minutes, day and night for the first 9 months of his life.
I did read ncss then to try and cut down on the night feedfs, but until my milk supply dropped during my current pg he was still feeding at least 2 hourly during the day (at 14 months)

KristinaM · 22/01/2009 20:49

your second child sounds normal to me

i am of you with only 1-3 night feeds at 13 weeks

NimChimpsky · 22/01/2009 20:51

My dd fed every 2 hours day and night for 7 months.

At 20 months she feeds several times a day and a couple of times at night!

CantSleepWontSleep · 22/01/2009 20:54

Ds 15 wks tomorrow, and feeds about every 1.5-2 hours during the day (unless having a long snooze in the carrier whilst we're out and about), and too fucking much every 2.5-3 hours at night, until about 4am, where he tends to feed about every 40 mins .

He's a chubster heading towards the 91st centile.

CokeFan · 23/01/2009 20:45

I was wondering about frequency of feeds - it seems like just about anything can be considered "normal" and the advice I've been given from various sources has always been subjective - using terms like "often", which could mean anything.

My DD is 20 weeks old and I sometimes wonder if I try to feed her too often - we definitely went through a period where I would try to feed her and she would refuse and cry but then be hungry 10 minutes later. I got really fed up with people telling me to feed her on demand so there was no pattern and then asking me (even at 5 days old) when her next feed was due! Apparently I wasn't supposed to time breastfeeds but I was supposed to know when she was last fed, whether it was a "good" (i.e. long) feed and when she was likely to be hungry again. I was also unhappy with being her only food source so we've started giving her some food too - she had top ups of formula up to about 9 days old (hospital insisted) but I haven't wanted to give her formula since.

We've had all sorts of feeding patterns when she was small - at one point she was feeding constantly between 4pm and 10pm but that's stopped now. Her weight curve has fluctuated slightly above and below the 25th centile line (currently above).

Her "pattern" since she was about 10 weeks old is to feed about every 1.5 to 2 hours for varying amounts of time during the day (depends what we're doing). She has a bath in the evening at about 6.30, a last feed and then goes to bed between 7 and 7.30. I get her up some time between 7 and 8 in the morning whenever the leg-waving and gurgling starts .

tassisssss · 23/01/2009 20:46

dd is 7.5 months and mostly feeds 4 times during the day and once overnight

accessorizequeen · 23/01/2009 20:52

My dt's are 16 weeks, they're going every 2 hours during the day and having a 3 hr break over lunch (kind of them then cluster feeding from 4.30ish. I'm finding now that they're feeding for nearly an hour for the day feeds though, rather than the 15-20mins they were doing before. DD sleeps through 12 hours, DS3 up 1-3 times.
