Quick vote for formula brands

Hi. Just wanted to see which brand was most popular. Ds was on SMA Gold, but he was constipated, had very stubborn wind, suffered colic and had bad reflux.
I was told by hv that lots of babies have problems with SMA so wondered if it's worth trying a different brand with ds2

Anyone?

aptamil!
is wat most of the babies are on in the day nursery i worked on!

littleboyblue · 13/01/2009 19:07

Ok. That's the expensive one isn't it? I know someone that was using that one but said she had trouble finding it in stores sometimes although she did mean the pre-made in the carton for emergency.
Thanx pickcherries, one vote for aptamil

I have always used Aptamil, but my friend's LO is on Heinz nuture and swears by it (her DD got lots of wind from Aptamil). Try one and see how you go I think is the best advice.

bamboobutton · 13/01/2009 19:10

i tried every brand with ds, Hipp organic was the only one that agreed with him.

cloudydaze · 13/01/2009 19:10

I was recommended Aptamil & used it for both my children who both seemed to like it. It isn't as easy to get as say Cow & Gate though I could always get it at a supermarket & Boots also stock it.

thisisyesterday · 13/01/2009 19:10

when i was ff ds1 he started on sma gold but was really constipated.
aptamil made him throw up all the time.

he was fine with hipp organic and cow and gate

littleboyblue · 13/01/2009 19:11

Thanx sponge. Hadn't really thought about Heinz either.
We had to change ds's formula a few times due to the treatment for reflux so shouldn't imagine it'd be a prob to switch on this one if we came across probs would just rather get an idea as to what everyone else found and if there is any truth to my ds possibly having these issues due to the brand of formula he was given. I obviously want to avoid another baby having to go through the pain and discomfort if I can

Sorry, meant to add, if you wanted to try them out maybe get those individual already made up ones rather than buy a whole box, most of the brands sell the single use packs.

TeaSleepFood · 13/01/2009 19:12

Aptamil was fine for but we only used it now and then as BF

littleboyblue · 13/01/2009 19:12

Ok. Hipp and C&G. Glad to hear it wasn't just us on the sma then.

I used Farleys with my DD, she was fine on this and it was one of the cheapest.

littleboyblue · 13/01/2009 19:15

Oh, I've seen Farleys in Boots.......

SMA was the worst for my ds, it was the first brand i tried because it was well known and it gave ds rock solid poo, he was only a month or so old

littleboyblue · 13/01/2009 19:18

That's why I used it bamboo, I didn't get any support at hospital with bf so had to ask for a bottle and she asked SMA or Cow and Gate, SMA was the first one so I said that, no real thought in it

Just one word of warning on using the cartons to try out the different brands - they can be v different from the powders. Another friend's DD got on really well with the Aptamil cartons but wouldn't take the powder at all and they ended up switching brands completely! Apparently the cartons can be sweeter.

mamadiva · 13/01/2009 19:57

My DS couldn't take SMA either.

We used Cow and Gate Omneo Comfort, that's fab for sicky babies according to my HV anyway and I have to say I agree it was fab with us!!!

Seona1973 · 13/01/2009 20:06

I used aptamil and cow and gate. I switched to cow and gate once I realised they were made by the same company but the C&G was a bit cheaper - both were fine for ds. You wont find Farleys any more as it was discontinued and replaced with Heinz Nurture

JoandMax · 13/01/2009 20:10

I use Aptamil for my LO - agree with the post about the ready made and powders being different though. Luckily my LO will take either but a friends baby will only have the cartons which is so expensive!!

hazeyjane · 13/01/2009 20:11

Dd1 had Aptamil, she had horrendous colic, and it didn't seem to make a difference which formula I used (although colief and Dr Browns bottles did)

I tried dd2 with Aptamil, but it gave her diarrhoea, I think it was because of the prebiotics in it so I started using Hipp Organic (which doesn't have them). You can order it online from their website, and Tesco and Sainsbury's do it online. It used to be cheaper than the other brands, but don't know if that has changed.

I don't think one brand is better than another, but one might suit your baby more.

Good luck

littleboyblue · 13/01/2009 21:55

Thanx everyone. hazey we also used dr brown bottles after a while and will be going straight on to them this time.
I never used the cartons for ds but is handy to know you can get them easily if need to (my mum had ds over night and couldn't find scoop in powder tin so was able to pop out and get a carton).
Like I said before I was thinking that maybe if there were a few people that had probs with sma I might avoid it this time in case it was a factor in ds's uncomfort. Think I might try cow and gate, but will have a read of the laels in tesco tomorrow too, see what differences are

I also used SMA at first and it made DD very constipated so switched to Aptamil then again to Cow & Gate once I realsed they are the same company so FF is the same.

The cartons are a slightly different colour when poured and its because they are caramelised and taste sweeter than the powder version.

MatNanPlusAbroad · 13/01/2009 22:00

Hipp as mentioned above due to it being organic it doesn't have the chemical additives that the other brands add, current baby moved onto it from Nanny Care with no problems.

She had previously had 2 aptamil feeds and they caused her alot of distress and a mucusy gut.

littleboyblue · 13/01/2009 22:04

Right, so the common thoughts here are that sma cause constipation. Will def not bother with that one straight off then
