I am feeling a bit lonely. All the other mum's I know have stopped and I think they think I am weird for still feeding DS who is 14 months. I am totally comfortable with still feeding him, he loves it and I see no reason to stop but sometimes when I am with other mums I feel like a bit of a freak!

Hi Stefka

We've crossed paths before on MN. I'm still feeding DD aged 16 months. In RL the only "extended" breastfeeders are overseas or in my local LLL group. MN keeps me from feeling too unusual.

I actually love shattering illusions. I look nothing like a lentil-weaver, so people are intrigued when they find out I'm still nursing. I was the first of my friends to have a baby and I'm hoping they'll all contemplate bf for longer than they might have, because they've seen me do it.

Hi.I love this thread! My DD is nearly 11 months and still breastfeeding. I hope to continue for as long as she wishes to feed.
I only managed 6 weeks with DS so I'm so proud I have managed to feed for so long!
No one I know has breastfed past 5 months so I'm definately a freak in my group. I will officially be able to join your group in Feb when DD will be 1 year.

I am so glad I started this thead - I feel so much better now!

It's funny how you can be really confident about your parenting choices but when you meet with other mum's who are all doing something different it can make you feel insecure. It's so good to know I am not alone.

You aren't alone!

How will 17m, 3 year and 4.5 years do you?

mawbroon · 06/01/2009 13:16

Hello Stefka.

Well, if you are a freak, then I am a superfreak.

"Still" feeding ds who is 3.2yo and we do it out and about if need be.

Have tried partial weaning, but ds was having none of it, so we pretty much feed on demand.

I see you live in Central Scotland. have you seen this meet up thread? You could come and meet some of us normal "extended" feeders.

Stefka · 06/01/2009 13:19

I hasdn't see that thread no! Thank you for letting me know about it, I am not too far from Gasgow.

Like LaTrucha, at one point I didn't know if I'd get beyond 3 weeks... then we made it over 6 months... then to 12 months... and now I'm wondering at 16mo whether DS will ever stop! We're generally on morning and early evening, with an overnight pit-stop and sometimes a top-up during the day.

I think a few of my Slingmeet mum friends are still bf, but think I'm alone of my NCT antenatal group. If I mention that I'm still bf I sometimes think folk are surprised, but no-one has said anything - other than my Mum who tactfully started going on about Little Britain and Bitty . I don't tend to feed when out and about because DS gets too distracted and I'd rather not flash my boobs.

[off topic - can't believe there's another numpty on Mumsnet! Glad I'm not the only one ]
