I have had both nipple and ductal thrush before, but it was so gradual and it was at the beginning so I thought it was upposed to hurt like that...This feels a bit different. Went to bed last night with left breast feeling sore, but didn't dwell on it. Fed DS about 800 times last night and every time I used left breast I noticed it was sore. Feels a bit like the pain of engorgement/blocked duct but they are not engorged and I cannot feel any lumps or hard bits. It is constant, doesn't stop or start with feeding(though quite frankly after last night who can tell as I never got more than an hour) but DS has red spots on his balls this morning which I would otherwise put down to SODDEN nappy but may be thrush. Am confused by the constantness and the pain being more "someone's bashed my boob" than burning...Anyone?
Please excuse rambling. Been up since 5.

not feeling at all flu like or have a temp? if so could be start of mastitis and get thee to dr quick as can be nasty. If no other symptoms and no lumps etc maybe try a cool flannel. someone much more informed will come along than me so hope they can be of more help

turtledove23 · 29/12/2008 06:43

Thanks YM! Knew I forgot to say something...no temp, no redness, no flu symptoms. Just pain if anything touches boob!

does ds have any white patches in mouth at all. spots down below can crop up for all sorts of reasons but if he does have white patches in mouth most likely to be thrush

turtledove23 · 29/12/2008 06:50

DS is clear. Mystery.

Am not overly keen to run to GP as she refused to believe me last time, had no idea about anything and told me to give up BF. Anybody got a clue what this is?

Hhmmm - any redness at all?

turtledove23 · 29/12/2008 15:36

No. Everything looks normal from the outside.

Sorry no idea - why not slap on some daktarin anyway just in case?

TheProvincialLady · 29/12/2008 15:46

Perhaps treat for thrush anyway? Maybe not with drugs but with acidophilus/washing bras at 60, changing every day/eat as little sugar as possible. It could be thrush developing. But keep an eye out for any symptoms of mastitis.

Grendle · 29/12/2008 15:46

Could it be the start of a blocked duct? You don't always get lumps and bumps at the beginning, especially if it's well drained. Things to try would be heat, massage, bath/shower plus expressing, gently massaging breast towards nipple with wide-toothed comb, feeding first from that side, feeding in different positions.

More here

Thank you!

Have been doing all things for blocked duct...cannot express even a drop out of it now. DS can't get anything either and it's too painful to let him wriggle around on it.
Am hoping that drinking loads and having warm flannels, ibuprofen etc will help toniht.

Oh dear poor you.
A bath maybe?
I have thrush in my left nip just now so can sympathise a little bit...

Grendle · 29/12/2008 21:42

Are you using a pump or hand expressing? Maybe try the other if you've only tried one. Relaxing helps with expressing, but it's easier said than done.

sasamax · 29/12/2008 22:14

Oh and take paracetamol - this situation definitely warrants it I'd say!

kathryn2804 · 29/12/2008 22:52

Have you got a good breastfeeding counsellor near you? Or a drop-in. Might be worth a visit!! They quite often know more than gps!!

yawningmonster · 30/12/2008 02:57

how are you turtledove? Any change?

turtledove23 · 30/12/2008 06:44

For some reason it unblocked at about 4 am.
He was feeding and I could feel it. It is still bruised feeling, but at least I can let him on it and milk is flowing again. Thank you very much ladies.
