introducing formula milk

my dd is 9 weeks. i've beeb thinking about introducing formula. i don't want to give up bf yet but i'd like her to get used to formula so it's not such a shock when we start weaning & to give me an opportunity to go out myself. i express & she takes it well but it doesn't satisfy her enough for me to leave her for long. i no this is probably quite a trivial question.

Hiya,

You don't ever HAVE to give formula, even when weaning if you are bfing. Could you express often to build up both expressing supply and go out that way?

I am rubbish at expressing, but I did find that if I made the time to express at the same time every day, I did get a bit more after a few days - have you tried that?

We introduced the odd bottle of formula to DS at something like 9 weeks, and he had absolutely no concerns at all - I would imagine if your DD is happy to take expressed milk in a bottle she won't mind formula in a bottle. If you wanted to introduce it slowly you could always mix a tiny bit with expressed milk, then up the proportion.

I would leave it a bit with the formula. It's so much better for them to be exclusiveley breastfed for the 1st 6 mths. Not good for their digestion, sometimes get constipation, bad for your milk supply, it is cows milk at the end of the day, designed for baby cows, not humans!
