How much milk should a 10 month old be having?

Hi - I think I am overfeeding my baby! Her tummy is getting quite fat. No idea what she weighs I'm afraid. (bad mummy alert) she never refuses milk - either boob or bottle, but sometimes is not that bothered about food.

She has both boobs at 5 or 6am then naps until 7ish

Breakfast - varies, sometimes half a weetabix or some toast and banana

9.30 5 oz milk
10-11.30 nap

1pm Lunch, (today) scrambled egg & smoked salmon (is that even allowed for a 10 month old?)

2.30 5 oz milk and then nap

4.30 both boobs (usually 6pm but I got home early and gave in)

5.30 homemade (proud) vege soup

7pm 4oz milk & bed

(she would have had more than 4oz (up to 7oz) but I am limiting it as I think I am giving her too much milk.)

the minimum recommended is about 20oz up to 1 year so it doesnt sound like she is overfeeding to me.

I don't think you are giving her too much. Are the bottles formula or expressed milk? They do get fat tummies and then usually have growth spurts where they get skinny again. They know whats best for them. If she was not eating and just taking milk, I'd say you may be overfilling her with milk, but it sounds bang on imo.

Thanks for the reassurance. The bottles are formula.

It is hard when you don't know how much breastmilk they are getting, but from past expressing I can estimate that she gets about 6oz from a breastfeed (more in the morning & less in the evening) so that means 26oz in total today.

I have been reading threads about 'dropping a milk feed' and thought perhaps I was supposed to be doing that.

LO would not be impressed however!

Don't worry, they tend to drop feeds in their own time and are all very different. You will know when she doesn't want it anymore/wants food instead. It tends to be the night feeds that go first, then the morning, then afternoon. Morning and afternoon feeds turn into snack time instead (banana/cereal/toast/dried fruit/fresh fruit).

omy · 11/12/2008 20:08

Thanks! I will stop worrying.

Hello (again) omy . I seem to be only opening your threads tonight!

My DTs have

6:30am 7oz bottle
7:30am Breakfast (weetabix / ready brek / toast)
9:15ish to 10am nap
10:15am snack (fruit normally, or breadsticks if out)
11:30am Lunch (meat / pots / veg type combo)
12:30pm to 2:30pm nap
2:30/3pm 3 or 4oz max
6/7/8oz at 6pm
7pm BED hurrah!

They sometimes have a snack as well or instead of 2:30pm bottle. Some days they are not bothered about the milk at that time but other days they are gagging for it!

My DS2 is 10mo old too, I'm only bf him but have dropped the mid-morning feed recently.
So have:

Early morning:
6/7ish bf
7.30 breakfast
10.30ish snack & juice/water
12 lunch
btwn 12 & 4 bf
5 tea
6/7 2x bf
= 4 sides of bf, roughly 5 or 6 oz each time
= 20-24ish oz

Thanks egg! just found you on Neenz's puree thread! I am so relieved that she is better at chewing now - I still fish big lumps out of her mouth (in paranoia) but she is FURIOUS when I do!

Thanks carols - when are the naps? My LO seems to like milk before bed at the mo - I know this is against all advice of babywhisperers etc and until recently we only fed milk after naps, but LO got us round to her way of thinking one day last week when she REFUSED to go to sleep for her morning nap (1.5 hours of crying!) so I gave her a bottle and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Omy DS1 used to be the same. Even if he didn't have a full feed I would often give him some milk before a nap as I kind of figured at least he wouldn't wake from hunger! Now I tend to offer them water before the naps. DS1 still sometimes has milk before his lunchtime nap (age 2.10) and always always has a huuuuuge amount before bed (nearly a pint ).

Oh dont forget my DTs are a month older than your DD. They only dropped their morning milk feed about a month ago (used to have about 4 or 5oz at 10:30am).

omy · 11/12/2008 20:35

My 11 year old likes a pint of milk before bed too! we have to stop her or there will be none left for breakfast!

I was wondering about the 10.30 milk feed - when I went back to work DH would put her down for morning nap and give her a bottle when she woke, but sometimes when I was home at that time I would instinctively breastfeed her before her nap. Recently she has demanded a bottle before the morning nap!
