I've had a bad cold for 6 weeks now and can't seem to shake it off. Someone told me that it is because I am still BF my 7month old DS. Can this be right? I don't want to give up yet but also can't function like this for much longer. Does anyone have any opinions on/experience with this?
Thanks!

Watching this thread with interest as have had series of colds and bugs since having DD (9 months) and am usually very well.

Maybe it's more to do with recovering from having a baby, rather than specifically about bf, but hopefully someone here will know!

I am the opposite. Have never been so healthy since being pregnant/bf! (DD now 7mths and down to one BF/day). I used to get cold after cold and every virus going. Not been ill at all apart from the usual pregnancy tiredness, aches and pains and a slight snuffly nose recently.

I really don't think it is the breast feeding.

It is the run down-ness of having a new child.

I would question you having the same cold for 6 weeks though. You either have a secondary infection or you have had 2 or 3 colds in succession - very common. And very frustrating!

I also have had the opposite.

Since having ds three years ago, I have hardly had a cold, and have had one bout of D&V.

I am sure that I posted a while back asking if bf actually helped the immunity!

Hope you shake it off soon, and I really don't think it is the bf tbh.

I breastfed for 5 years (3 children - not one five year old!) and almost never got ill. I stopped bf in January this year and have been ill on and off all year....

i always seem to get colds etc and am bf ds 8 months. think it's more to do with him being up feeding half the night and so i'm tired and run down rather than the bf.

Broucek · 11/12/2008 19:42

thanks all, it's good to know that it's nothing to do with BF but now i am scared to give up EVER as it menas that i might be ill even more often than now .

Snap never ill while BF and I was always ill. Constant cold since giving up BFing DD but thats probably because I'm pregnant. I always took pregnacare plus mummy omega tablets I don't know if that helped.

Myself and lots of people I know have been ill for 4+ weeks recently so you are not alone.

Wisknit · 12/12/2008 09:53

just to repeat what most people have said; not inly is there a very nasty bug going around but the illness probably has to do with general tiredness/rundowness that comes with a baby.
Only thing is are you eating well? I found with ds2 that as soon as I started eating loads I felt better.
