Is it normal for a nine week old to feed every two hours?

I keep getting the impression from my mum, mother-in-law and others that he should be going longer by this stage, but I find he starts to cry for a feed every two hours so I usually feed him at 7.30am, 10am, midday, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm etc
Is that too much?

Um....if that's what he seems to need and is thriving on it, then what is wrong with it? Why do they think he 'should' be doing something different? What health drawbacks or other negative results might there be from responding to your baby's need? Ask them - they won't have any sensible response

hi i'm no expert but my mother and mil insist on the same but i ignore and feed dd whenever she wants. imo that generation were conditioned that 4 hr was normal, if you can ignore them then do so

i had similar comments from people. Jane, ignore them and trust your instinct

Sounds normal to me, from what I remember of those foggy days of DS's early babyhood! I also remember feeling the pressure from relatives and others about how long he 'should' be going...

Sounds like you're responding really well to your baby

my ds fed evry 2 hours( through the night as well) until he was 4 months old!

do what you feel is best!

Bottle or breast?

My 14 week old still does this - well, he cluster feeds (so on/off for a few hours), then goes an hour or so, then will go about 5 ish at night and another 3 our gap maybe in the day. If that's what he needs, it's what he needs

BF? Feed when he wants it and ignore MIL, frankly times have changed

dsrplus8 · 09/12/2008 15:30

babies have growth spurts when they feed more, it normal at any age, just keep doing what your doing, your doing fab, after all you know your baby better than anyone else!

Guadalupe · 09/12/2008 15:33

My family said thing like that, in fact, my MIL was particularly fond of telling me to 'put that baby down'. I ignored her.

I'm sure my DD did this, she eventually held out for three and then four hours. Now we are on solids she generally has something every three hours again (little and often).

I don't think he would take what he doesn't need.

DS, nearly 9 weeks doing this in day and night but he seems happy although HV seemed quite stunned by him putting on 2 lbs in 2 weeks when he was weighed yesterday and suggested I don't let him feed as often! DD fed every 2 hours (but only in day) until I stopped bf when she was 6 mths old. If it doesn't bother you then who cares what others say.
