Apologies for graphic title

my mostly bf 4mo has pooed EVERY feed for the past 2 - 3 days. His poor little bum is red raw. (some poos are only a squirt) sometimes green.

any ideas?

no change in my diet.

perhaps co-incided with increased formula (long story - basically hes a hopeless 5 minutes feeder every hour)??

any ideas?

sorry to hear this - metanium is v effective for sore bottoms

Rowlers · 04/12/2008 19:18

No idea what's perhaps caused it - sometimes you just never know.
I'd use lots of bum cream though each nappy change to minimise pain. Drapolene I find extremely good.
Hope it's better soon.

Could be teeth but, like Rowlers say, sometimes you just never know. My DS's sore bum has been calmed with Kamillosan and as much fresh air nappy-off time as the temperature allows.

Another vote for Metanium here!! It's great stuff, a very effecive barrier.

In BF Mums there are certain things in your diet that can contribute to runny/ sore bums in DC's. Citrus fruits is something that sticks in my mind! I had to stop eating satsumas over Xmas in both my DS's while I was BFing, bummer!

Do some research on t'internet but you might have to be prepared to limit or give up some stuff.

Good luck

I always bang on about this but it could be fore & hindmilk imbalance, esp if runny, foamy &/or green poos & could come on if there is anything to affect your supply slightly - like giving a bit more formula in your case, getting your period, or just randomly. There is less fat in the first foremilk so if he is getting too much of this (could be if feeding so frequently - not staying on long enough to get more of the fattier hindmilk) then it is digested differently and can be a bit uncomfortable going through babe's system. The steps to remedy it are simple enough so worth trying - check out this link breastfeeding.hypermart.net/toomuchmilk.html and also breast compression which can be done towards the end of when babe is feeding to encourage him to stay on & to push out more of the hindmilk www.kellymom.com/newman/15breast_compression.html I tried all this first as I was reluctant to try changing my diet! (it worked for me)
You could try getting his poos straight in a potty or other suitable receptacle if you know when he is going to do one then less chance of it getting it smeared on him to cause irritation. Look up elimination communication (or EC) for how to hold him. Do not use baby wipes containing alcohol. We use cotton wool or muslin cloths with water only or soothing weak solution of camomile tea but do pop on cream on the odd occasion there is a bit of redness.

Sound advice from elvisgirl, and the tooth thing might be begining.

best remedy for sore bum is egg white. it makes a film on the skin that wont be broken by the poo as long as it is renewed about every 2-3 changes i BF my DD and this was a lifesaver as she had a constantly sore bum when teething.
i agree it may be the BM causing the runny poo as if he is not getting the right balance it can cause it to be digested differently than if he is getting both fore milk and hind milk maybe try to coerce him to have longer feeds or pump the hind milk and bottle feed him that
