Formula was always a commercial product - right from the start when 'infant food' was advertised in Victorian newspapers and magazines as a supplement to mother's own milk. Doctors in the US in the 20th century concocted their own formulas for their infant patients, at a price of course. Widespread cows milk based infant formula came in when it became commercially possible to dry and package milk on an industrial scale.

It's all in 'The Politics of Breastfeeding'.

Its raison d'etre was never medical.

I think it does make a good argument against formula, and not giving cows milk etc to babies until they are weaned, but dairy is part of western diet now, so once weaned I don't think of it as so bizarre (altho my sister would be with you broguemum, she hated milk!)

i don't really want to use sma but my partner and i are trying to compromise that's why we might well use sma gold. i want soy formula.

tiktok · 21/11/2008 13:27

Ema, is it because of your feelings about cows and milk and udders that you'd prefer to use soy formula?

Soy formula looks like milk, though....

Ema76 · 21/11/2008 13:29

i know i use soya milk myself. i like cows just think that the milk they produce is for a calf.

tiktok · 21/11/2008 13:39

The poor old soya bean doesn't have any soya babies! The 'milk' made from soya beans is not really milk, and its almost entirely synthetic, and the non-synthetic bits are just not good for babies - that's why it's not recommended unless the ff baby can really not tolerate any other formula.

Determination - There are some really good dairy free alternatives for cheese and yoghurt. And ice cream! Tofutti is brilliant (the chocolate one is fantastic...)

Ema76 · 21/11/2008 13:46

it is much easier today ilovemydog. it'll get better eating out one day. just like being vegetarian alone was hard 20 years ago when buying things from shops and eating out.

Ema76 · 21/11/2008 13:46

no never heard of soya babies either

I am now imagining a cute little beanie-weanie with a nappy on ad a smiley face!

determination · 21/11/2008 18:30

Guess what i bought today?! Yes, you guessed it Soy milk - sweetened. It is actually far nicer on cereal anyway. Just hope my dds like it too

ilovemydog - What is Tofutti? Likely a stupid question but i have no idea..
