Echinacea while breastfeeding?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

I am FED UP with getting all the viruses on offer (and of DS getting them too, usually before me) and thinking back wistfully to when I used to work for money I had a reasonably stressful job but took Echinacea and hardly ever went down with colds, etc. No idea if it was a placebo effect, but it did seem to work. If there's anything I can do to limit all the bugs I'm getting, I'd like to try it, because I feel worn into the ground looking after DS while ill most of the time. (Yes, I'm getting another cold, hence the whingeing. These last two months, DS and I have shared Hand, Foot and Mouth, two colds, and a D&V bug. This cold will be the third one.)

Does anyone know if taking tincture of echinacea, or in another form, is safe while bf? All the different types in the chemist say things along the lines of 'don't take while bf' but virtually everything you can buy in a chemist says that! Obviously they can't run tests on pregnant or bf women. My GP would also say the same - she's very circumspect. But do any bf experts here know of any research or reason why it's unsafe?

I take it during pregnancy & while breastfeeding. In fact my herbal medicine for children( from Neals Yard) says to take echinacea if baby has a cold as the baby will benefit from it passing through the breastmilk. They also supply my echinacea tinture & have said its fine while breastfeeding.

Hooray! Thanks, Boogeek and CM - should have thought to check with Kellymom.

Right. I'm off down Boots tomorrow!
