how many feeds does your bf 6 month old have in 24 hours?

dd usually has 5 feeds (sometimes 6 and occasionally only 4) but talking to friends with formula fed babies they were only having 3 bottles a day. I have no reason to want to reduce her feeds was just wondering what other bf babies are doing at 6 months.

ds was every two hours for 8months. he started to eat a bit more than and had less at night.

deaconblue · 17/11/2008 20:59

so 3 hourly during the day and none at all at night isn't that many feeds then really? every 2 hours? You must have been knackered

yes i was. all and any sleep is marvellous now, i am easily pleased

that sounds very good feeding too, plenty in but not too exhausting for you.

babyOcho · 17/11/2008 21:28

At 8 months DD has dropped no milk. Still 5-6 in 24 hours. Her sleep sucks as well at the moment as well.

I also have been chatting to FF babies mums who have about 3 bottles during the day and none at night.

Am so glad to hear its not just us!

scorpio1 · 17/11/2008 21:30

dd is 7 months tomorrow and has about four bf a day, she has cut down herself since beginning BLW at 6 months

wuglet · 17/11/2008 21:30

DS feeds every 2-3 hrs during the day then either once or not at all during the night.

Is a fat porker though!

scorpio1 · 17/11/2008 21:30

she has none between 7-7

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/11/2008 21:36

DS2 is 5 1/2 months and has 7 feeds in 24 hours (I think!) I lose track some nights so it could be 8! Roughly they're at 7am 10am 1pm 4 pm 7pm. Then 1.30 am and 4ish am. We'll be starting to wean him in a few wekks so I'm hoping this may lead to better nights! He's a porker too - 9kgs already so just above 91st percentile!

pleasechange · 17/11/2008 21:41

DS is 4.5 months and is feeding every 2 hours still (day and night!)

sunshine75 · 17/11/2008 21:45

Dd is 6.5 months.

Until weaning she had 6 per 24 hours (7,10,1,4,7 and one in the night).

Now she has 5 (7,11,3,7 and one in the night - with solids in between)

She has never had less but does sometimes have more (growth spurt/teeth etc)

At some point in the future I may drop the 11 am one and move lunch forward but I have no plans to do it for a while.

Olifin · 17/11/2008 21:45

DS is 7.5 months and was having 5/6 feeds a day (including one night feed) until a few weeks ago. Recently, he seemed to be taking very little at each feed and generally just faffing about on the boob so I have spaced his feeds out further and he's now having 4/5 in a 24 hour period, and they are better quality, longer feeds than he was having previously.

Bear in mind that formula fills babies up more and their mums know how much they're taking (possibly taking in more per feed than breastfed babies). Also, as we all know, BF babies sometimes want the breast for comfort or to help them sleep and who would want to deny them that?!

Sounds like what you're doing is suiting you both fine for now. I'm sure you'll know if/when it's time to change things.

stretchmarkqueen · 17/11/2008 21:46

every 2 hours here too. I even gave a bottle of formula, (cos I was ill and needed sleep!) and he still went 2 hours!!!

pleasechange · 17/11/2008 22:18

olifin I agree - every time DS is on my knee he wants to feed and a lot of it is just out of habit/for comfort. I'm fine with this as it's not much to ask when he's so young. I do pay the price of this frequent feeding at night though!

nigglewiggle · 17/11/2008 22:25

Opposite issue here! I have a porker who is 6 months and loving her (solid) food. She's just not bothered about bfeeding during the day. She's too nosey and gets distracted. However, she still feeds a couple of times in the night and she feeds nicely, because her sister's not there jumping about and distracting her. I could do with a full night's sleep though!!

I guess this thread shows that they're all different.

kathryn2804 · 17/11/2008 22:29

Def, ignore the ff Mums. It's sounds exactly right what you're doing!

PeppermintPatty · 17/11/2008 22:32

At 6 months about every 2/3 hours in the day. No feeds or one feed at night depending on whether she woke up.

She was still having about 3/4 feeds a day at 10 months.

didoreth · 18/11/2008 00:22

ds is 6 months, still feeding at least every 3 hours in the day, and at least twice at night.
