BETA BLOCKERS and BFing

I have been put on beta blockers for a heart problem but am worried as im still BFing DD2. The doctor said that small amounts can pass to baby though BM, and that i should monitor DD2s heart rate. Anyone had this?? Is it a real risk?
he said it can slow her heart rate and then went on to ask how long i was planning to BFeed for (he knows dd2 is 13months)

help

I am 30 weeks pg, and have AV nodal re-entry tachycardia. Was suggested this week that I have BB- Bisoprolol 2.5mg.
Presumably if it's safe for pg, it's fine for bf too I hope!!!

andiem · 09/11/2008 18:17

I took labetalol for high Bp when pregnant and then when BFing and all was well ds2 did have a slightly lower heart rate when he was asleep but he was fine

andiem · 09/11/2008 18:17

eachpeach have you not been offered an ablation?

EachPeachPearMum · 09/11/2008 18:22

Indeed I have... but was pg by the time I saw the consultant... so unsurprisingly we're leaving it a while!

I am having increased tachycardia though (was ambulanced thurs am) so the drs at Assessment ward suggested BBs.

EachPeachPearMum · 09/11/2008 18:22

Do you have AV NRT andiem?

lisad123 · 09/11/2008 18:22

well they picked up my fast HR when i was preggy (nearly 2 years ago now) but they told me it would settle onece dd2 was born. Not caused me too much trouble, but got bad last night, and i spent last night in A&E Resusse (sp?) with my heart running 185 +!
dh will pick up beta blockers soon so will look and see what it is.
thanks girls

no have worked in paediatric cardiology for 20 years so seen a few hope BB do the trick

EachPeachPearMum · 09/11/2008 18:26

Ah!
It was nice when the consultant told me I was too young to be on drugs for the rest of my life, so should have ablation.... haven't been too young for anything for quite a while!

andiem · 09/11/2008 18:27

hee hee

lisad123 · 09/11/2008 18:34

no idea sweetheart as dh didnt do the breatfeeding. he has been bisoprolol and a different one before now. not on any anymore as far as i know.

when do u go back? who is your consultant there? is Dr Mary Lynch still there?

lisad123 · 09/11/2008 18:42

it was dr lynch last time so guess it will be her team again. I have 4 weeks, i think its going to take a few weeeks to get some results back and also giving Beta blockers time to work.

i call you once my lot are in bed, got to do the dreaded nit check again. just in case.

andiem · 09/11/2008 18:55

hope you feel better soon lisad

EachPeachPearMum · 09/11/2008 19:40

Oh lisa- you are a fair bit younger than me... but obviously we have different conditions.
185 is too high to live with!

Have they said how you monitor DD2's heartrate?

lisad123 · 09/11/2008 19:49

yes i certainly felt the 185, although barely conscience by that point

Im meant to keep taking and recording her HR. Im hoping that if i take straight after her morning feed, it might not be so bad.
