latch looks good from teh outside.

but he NEVER comes off on his own.

is windy as hell, too.

passing stools well and colour is good, plenty of wet nappies.

he often gets very hungry and shakes his head trying to get on, so i wind up swaddling him to try to calm him.

has a preference for one breast.

widgey pillow helps positioning a lot.

what's going wrong? his sister was a dream to feed!

He was 9lb 12oz Expat - you need to wait for your milk to really come in and then he will probably settle a bit more. Same thing happened to a friend of mine with a big baby too - he stopped being so whingy or feeding for so long when the milk came in proper

Congrats btw

kalo12 · 04/11/2008 20:07

congrats sounds normal, my ds used to feed for about two hours when he was titch

sweetkitty · 04/11/2008 20:14

Sounds completely normal sorry expat

If you can and I know how hard it is with another 2 to look after and no family around is put him to the breast every 2 hours it will bring your milk in quick as everyone says once your milk comes in he will settle down.

Feels funny feeding a baby again doesn't it?

expatinscotland · 04/11/2008 20:17

DH is changing him just now and i need to go get the girls ready for bed as we didn't get home till so late

luckily dh is home for a month and my folks arrive on the 19th for another month.

but yeah, this is going to be a palaver, kitty.

determined to do it, though.

Congratulations!

ds was 10lb 2oz and he used to feed for up to half an hour on each side for every feed - quite common for big babies I believe. He did manage to go 3/4 hours between feeds though and went through the night from 10.30pm to 6am from about 6 weeks so plus points to look forward too

doggiesayswoof · 04/11/2008 20:25

Sounds normal I'm afraid. Neither of mine ever came off on their own until they were much older.

Dd used to feed for 45 mins on one side then maybe 25 on the other.

Ds was much more windy than dd - from the bottom end especially. He was a big boy too so don't know if that's significant...

Agree with sweetkitty, just keep putting him to the breast. Good luck

chequersandchess · 04/11/2008 20:27

Mine still does this and she's 12 weeks. She was a big baby too.

frisbyrat · 04/11/2008 20:33

Both mine did this. 8 lb 3, and 9 lb 10 respectively.
Good luck, expat!

littlelamb · 04/11/2008 20:36

My ds did this too- he screamed merry hell the first night home and I was a wreck. Turned out he was just hungry, when my milk came in he latched on and has hardly been off since. I have found that he feeds much more than dd ever did, though I don't know that its just I notice it much more than I ever did iyswim, as with dd I had the luxury of sitting back and letting him feed, whereas now I have dd demanding my attention too!

Niecie · 04/11/2008 20:42

DS1 was little (6lb 9oz) and would easily feed for ages - up to an hour at a time, sometimes more. He didn't stay on the 9th centile very long.

DS2 used to the head shaking thing, although it was more like apple bobbing than shaking, he would try to almost latch on and bounce off again, repeatedly. That stopped after a week or so. He didn't feed for as long as DS1 but would easily feed for 45minutes at a time in the first month. He got a lot more efficient after that. He was biggish at birth. (9lb)

It all sounds very normal to me too. Get comfy, put your feet up and go with the flow. You both sound like you are doing fine.

ShowOfHands · 04/11/2008 20:49

Oh gosh. Normal for some babies. But will settle.

DD was the same, great suck reflex, never came off on her own, was on more than off, bobbed around before latching. She was on the 50th centile when born but soon shot up to above the top line.

taczilla · 04/11/2008 20:50

Hi Expat congratulations on your ds it is ever so nice to have a baby in the house isn't it. I was very shocked when I had my ds 4 years ago in that he fed constantly and as I had very little support breastfeeding it is amazing I persevered as my nipples became ever so painful and cracked. So if you can avoid all the possible problems like cracked nipples then once your supply is established and you've found your groove all will be well. good luck x but as you know mumsnet can be used for light relief or as the font of all knowledge. I have a 3 year gap between my pair and would've been lost without my tri-cotti sling.

it seriously HURTS. he has a really strong suck reflex.

even the paed noticed it when she had to test it out.

he just fed for about 4 mins.

i'm doing something wrong on the right side.

he's doing well, opening up, but i'm left-handed and not quick enough to get him on and everytime i do it's like razor blades on the bottom side of the boob.

ditton the left one, but i can get him on that and just suck air in and out the entire time he's on.

DD2 was never like this.

sob!

it's going to be a long night.

i'd better go unpack some stuff.

expatinscotland · 04/11/2008 21:50

dh is holding him and he's sitting on his lap smacking his lips, i know in two mins he'll be crying again.

so will i at this rate!

the afterpains aren't so bad.

paracetemol and ibu are keeping them in check.

soooo want to continue with this, but the pain is shocking.

and it's actually more in the boob, on the underside of it.

Pinkyminkee · 04/11/2008 22:11

Congratulations, Expat.

None of my babies have liked my left side as much as my right. I'm left handed so not sure if that is a factor. Holding the baby on my left arm feeding from the side really helped me a lot with getting them to feed on my left.

ilovemydogandPresidentObama · 04/11/2008 22:16

I had this with DS. Having b/f DD, I thought it would be easy. It wasn't and we had to really work on the latch. I got terrible blisters on my boobs the first few days, but then found a good position and proper latch.

Lansinoh helps with 'tits on fire'

sweetkitty · 04/11/2008 22:16

Glad afterpains aren't bad my third birth I thought I was having another baby they were agony.

DD2 was like this 9lbs 3ozs born, 10lbs a week later and nicknamed Dyson because of her suck.

Have you got Lansinoh cream?

trying to think of something to suggest, someone told me at the start, when your toes curl when they go on count slowly to 10 and it should stop hurting after that if it doesn't it's the latch.

you know it WILL pass

LittleWhizzingBella · 04/11/2008 22:19

congratulations expat

no advice, just happy for you.

gomez · 04/11/2008 22:22

Congratulations Expat, 2 girls and a boy is so the way to go. But be aware they are just a different breed - being a mother of girls in no way prepares you for being the mother of a boy .

Anyhoo I had three big babies and each of them fed for bloody hours at a time until (1) my milk came in (2) they had filled their boots at about 6 weeks.

Don't however be afraid to pop him off if needs must.

gomez · 04/11/2008 22:27

Sorry didn't finish - if he isn't on right i.e. you are in pain - get him off and try again. It isn't worth it - next feed will be worse and downwards spiral will occur. DH can swaddle him and calm him down until you are ready to try again.

expatinscotland · 04/11/2008 23:31

am trying and trying and it's just not working.

there's no 24 hour shop around here or DH would have been despatched for some formula, steriliser and bottles already, it hurts that much.

he is just not getting on right and it's so bad it even brings tears to my eyes to break the latch.

it's going to be a long night, because i'm just going for have to feed him like that, but DH will catch the first ferry across for the bottles and formula.

i cannot do this. just can't.

don't know anyone who can help, either, and i'd need a lot.

Put your finger in his mouth to break the suction.
