DD will be a year old on the 20th of this month. How do I change over from formula to cows milk, do I do it gradually?
Will she need vitamin drops?
Should I increase her solid (BLW) food intake?

Gawd, I wish I stil BF then I wouldn't have to do this.

One day, I just put cows milk in the bottle instead of formula and she drank it all up. If you wanted to, you could do it gradually I suppose, by mixing 50:50 until she got used to the change in sweetness.

IMO no extra vitamin drops are needed or anything like that.

Thanks 2cats, that is why I was thinking of doing just giving her a bottle of cows instead of formula.

Also do I have to wait until she is 12mo or can I begin now, you know just give her one bottle of cows a day and the rest still formula?

DustyTV, I did the 50/50 thing with the first bottle and the twins seemed fine so then at the next bottle I just used all cows' milk. I was planning to do 50/50 for first few days but then decided it was a lot easier to just make the switch a bit more suddenly.

bellabelly · 04/11/2008 11:32

And the twins actually seemed to prefer cows' milk anyway

PuppyMonkey · 04/11/2008 11:33

I did it gradually over a couple of days, making the ratio of cow's milk stronger and stronger each day until the formula had bitten the dust. Did it by about 11 months... never had any probs!

DustyTvHasSizzlingSparklerssss · 04/11/2008 11:38

Thankyou, I am going to try her with a bottle of cows now.

Also did you heat it up still?

I did, but you don;t have to. It's just what my dd preferred.

It's soooo much easier once you can ditch all that formula faff.

mamadiva · 04/11/2008 12:11

I gave up giving my DS formula when he was a week off his 1st birthday. Just used up last of formula and thought bugger it so gave him cold cows milk and he prefferred it anyway so... that worked for us but you might need to use 50:50.

DustyTvHasSizzlingSparklerssss · 04/11/2008 12:15

She has just had a 6oz bottle of cows milk and drunk all of it.
Thanks.

We switched to beakers at the same time. Cows milk is so much nicer than formula - I think they just never look back.

DustyTvHasSizzlingSparklerssss · 04/11/2008 12:31

How do you get them to take beakers with milk as DD will not take a sippy cup/beaker if it has milk in. She will only take water or juice in a sippy cup/ beaker.

I would love to get her off the bottles TBH, I hate faffing about washing them.

hmm. mine were started on beakers at nursery and the other kids had beakers which prob helped. What if you went cold turkey on beakers?
My dd2 was very good about switching and even let us switch her bedtime milk, but when ds1 arrived (she was only 15mo) we went back to bottles at bed time. Not sure how to break the habit now - feels mean.

ohIdoliketobebesidethe · 04/11/2008 12:35

I meant cold turkey on bottles obv.

DustyTvHasSizzlingSparklerssss · 04/11/2008 12:54

I suppose I she could go cold turkey on bottles, should I still give her the same amount?

OP posts:
ohIdoliketobebesidethe · 04/11/2008 13:27

I think mine cut down the amount she wanted around then. But my memory fails me (was all of 6 months ago!).

bellabelly · 04/11/2008 19:25

I switched to sippy cups about a week after switching to cows' milk - just thought I'd try and do it all at roughly the same time. I def recommend the cold turkey approach but don't throw the bottles out until you've tried it for a couple of days just in case she really won't switch just yet.
