How much breast milk do you express in one session?

How much milk should I be expressing from one breast / after one session for it to be adequate?

i am only getting 1-1.5 oz each time. Is that very little?

There is no "normal" amount firsttimer.
Please first of all bear in mind that the amount of milk you can express is no reflection at all on the amount of milk your baby is getting. There are some champion breastfeeders who cannot express anything at all, whereas some women can almost express another feed again after their baby has just had a satisfying feed.
Why are you expressing? Is it to build up a freezer stash or to increase supply?

I'm definitely not an expert and asked a similar questionn myself recently. Think it all depends on your let down, how old your little one is, time of day etc ....
Someone more useful will be along soon I'm sure.

I've only ever been able to express about 1/2 an ounce. It's no reflection on how much milk you have though. Some women are good at expressing, others not so good. Can also depend on type of pump.

Hunker can you please post on this thread for me if you get the chance? Woman is driving me batty!

Hi FirstTimer,
I started off being able to express 1-1 1/2 oz at a time, and as my baby got bigger and taking more milk, I would give more in the session - but only if I expressed in the morning, at any other time it stayed just 1 or 1.5 oz
I found it best to think of a session as a time, rather than concentrating on an amount - so would just express for 15 minutes max and whatever I got, that was it. It went into the freezer and mounted up. I thought it was best to freeze in 2 oz lots anyway, because I never really knew how much milk my DS needed in a feed and didn't want to defrost too much and then waste it

CharChar, I'm not Hunker, I'm just an adoring fan!

I'm a prime Jersey cow, me I've always been blessed with an over abundant supply and a, shall we say, enthusiastic letdown (have been known to clear three feet before now), and can get 6-7oz per breast first thing in a morning. But I've a friend who's now v sucessfully tandem feeding a newborn and a 2 yr old who's never felt a let down in her feeding career! Expressing is absolutely no indication of your sucess as a feeder, none whatsoever.

If you want to build up a freezer stash or for a particular occasion, it's probably best to express after a feed as you are doing, or express the other breast if you baby only takes one, or to build in another 'feed' somewhere in the day. I find morning time much the easiest. And I also second what Ladybee said, freezing in small amounts is wise, 2-4oz max I reckon.

I've a three month old. In the morning after she's had a good feed on one side and a little off the other, I'd get around 1oz from the "used" side, and 2 from the less used side. At night (10pm), I get around 4.5 oz doing both sides instead of feeding her directly - hubby gives bottle. I'll let the pump run for a minute or so after the last drops, and leave it at that however much I get. (BTW, if you're thinking about expressing daily, hiring an industrial strength double pump is great - wish I'd done it a lot earlier!!)

Most I ever got was about 3 oz - one memorable time I got 4 (took a photo and everything!) But my Mum was really jealous as she only ever got one ounce. How old is baby? She may only drink an ounce each time she BFs! As everyone has already said, how much you express is no indication of how much baby feeds. If you are looking to increase the amount you express e.g. exclusively expressing or something, do a search on here, there are lots of threads to help.
