Mam Bottles?

Hi, I have decided to switch to Mam bottles from Tommee Tippee as they are BPA free.

Dd had her first feed from one today and took a whole 6oz which is very rare for her - She normally takes betweek 3 and 5. She is 3mo.

Has anyone else changed and noticed a difference? I thought we would have battle on our hands because the teats are very different.

with ds1 we were recommended mam bottles as he hated avent and we have never looked back. they are fab and he never suffered with colic/wind at all

I used the mam bottles with both of my as DS1 had a tongue tie and colic and these were recomended by the cranial oesteopath (sp). They are excellent.

didn't notice any difference between DDs feeding patterns when we switched (but she only had the odd bottle of expressed milk until 10 months), but thought the MAM bottles were fab. I like the fact that they come apart completely to clean.

Im surprised that they have made such a difference. I am going to be stocking up tomorrow!

I bought Mam bottles as they are bpa free after using Avent, but I couldn't figure out how to use them. I thought they were going to explode when I tried to shake the formula to mix. Can you tell me the correct way to use and assemble them? I would like to give them a proper go, but just wish I knew what I was doing - they seem very different to Avent.

MAM bottles were the only ones breastfed DS would take after 10 months of trying every bottle and teat on the market - I love them

I'm afraid I have no advice for you on the mixing formula issue CiaraB as DS has a mixture of ready-made and cows milk.

You have to use your thumb to push the white plastic valve at the base back down until it clicks into place. Oh and when I wash them up, I always assemble that part or DH will just pick it up from the draining board and pour milk into bottomless bottle

They are quite different - I used Avent for DD, but you do get used to them.

CiaraB - I bought a dodgy batch last week. I put the valve in the bottom, assembled it all and shook it, the bottom came off and the milk went everywhere!!

We took them back and got the newer model.

My trick is - Put the valve in and push down with you sterilised tongs. Screw the bottle on tight and put in warm water. I used boiling and think it pressurised.

I then put the teat and lid on and shake whilst holding the bottom on. Then remove the lid to get rid of the pressure. Put the lid on and shake again.

Once you have done it a few times its easy x

I have used the Mam Ultivent bottles for months now and never had any trouble with them! Certainly didn't have to faff around like laura seems to be doing lol (no offense!).

I have always put boiling water straight into mine with absolutely no problems. Having said that, if i am making up a 6oz feed (for example), i will fill with 3oz of boiling, put 6 scoops in and then pour in another 3oz of cooled (previously measured) boiled water that's nice and cold from the fridge. Then i stick the teat/lid on and give it a good shake. No problem!

Oh and i just used my own teats with them as DD didn't get on very well with the Mam teats and they were absolutely fine. Any wide neck teat should fit them and do the job!

Hi RGPargy - I do faff!! Its because I ended up with formula all over me the other day!!

Do you think you could make up the bottles with 3oz of cooled boiled water with 6 scoops and then add 3oz of hot when lo is ready? They seem to take ages to warm up.

lol Laura!! i've done it myself when i filled them up with 6oz of boiling water so i know what you mean!!

The idea is that you put all the milk powder into the boiling water to kill the bacteria that could be lurking in the milk powder. so when the milk powder has dissolved into the boiling water, it is then safe to add the cooled water.

DD likes her milk temperature when it's made with half boiled and half cooled water but if your LOs are younger (DD is almost 10 months) you could make it up with, say, 2oz boiling to 4oz cooled to get the temperature just right, if that makes sense? That way you dont need to wait around for them to warm up/cool down. You will have a bottle of freshly made up milk that is the perfect temperature!

Thanks, I will give that a go. I am trying to time it around her usual feed times at the mo but at 3am its a nightmare!

Oh gawd, yeah, i never had to make up bottles for night feeds as DD was BF until nearly 6 months. For night feeds tho i would use a carton of ready made milk and a bottle warmer!
