Challenging negative attitudes of women who bottle feed

Eirlys · 17/09/2008 18:12

I am training to be a breastfeeding helper and am so shocked by one of the women on my course, I have completed the 2nd session this morning and after both sessions I have been tense all day.

She keeps spouting that she fed her two for a year (this was approx 20 yrs ago) and she got no help or support [in a way that implies that the majority of us who need/needed it are saps], and it was just natural. Today she went on a rant (entirely tangential to what we were talking about) on those who bottle feed, it sounded totally Daily-Mailish and like one of the Trolls who come on here and 'innocently' ask why women are so lazy as to not breastfeed. I couldn't hold my tongue and said that most women I know want to breastfeed but their breastfeeding experience is often sabotaged by wrong/poor/no help. I had murmurs of agreement from the rest of the class.

Perhaps it is just me who has the problem but I am really worried that she is going to come out of this class as a breastfeeding helper with this attitude.

I am a HUGE lurker and read loads of threads as I am so interested in breastfeeding but only made a few posts. I would be very grateful for the advice of you wise mnetters out there on how I should deal with this woman (or just tell me that i'm being too sensitive).

LMAO now.

btw, it is kiskidee in a name change. I am currently waiting to pop hence the nom de plume.

welliemum · 18/09/2008 00:17

Aha, I thought I "knew" you.

Ooh, that's so exciting! So we'll be seeing a lot of you in northern hemisphere night time!

IorekByrnison · 18/09/2008 00:18

What SGB said.

Eirlys good luck with the course. This woman sounds like a nightmare. Maybe you should introduce her to mumsnet and direct her to some of the threads where people have discussed the horrific problems they've had trying to get breastfeeding established. With any luck she'll see this thread too and realise what an arse she's been.

foxytocin · 18/09/2008 00:19

i think so. MNing when you are online will be the only kind of nightlife I will be having for a while.

MN night shift is cool. Mind you, I'm due in November so I'm quite looking forward to the novelty of daytime MN! [sad person]

Eirlys, have come late to all this but have to say that I think your instincts are good. Also, I really don't think you have done anything to breach confidentiality here. Do have a word with the tutor: if she/he has any sense they too should be concerned about the sort of attitude you describe.

LackaDAISYcal · 18/09/2008 16:50

foxytocin, I knew you were familiar, but couldn't place you...but it all slots into place now

I was thinking about you the other day and thinking you were due and that I hadn't seen you around.

Labour vibes wafting in your general direction

Hulababy · 18/09/2008 20:10

I can see absoultely nothing in the OP that might breach even the tightest off confidentiality clauses. Nowhere is anyone idetified, nor the location where the course takes place. The OP does not have a profile page, so there are no identifying statementts there either. There will be many courses such as this taking place all over the country and perhaps other coutnries. There are bound to be other woman with such negative attitudes starting out n such a course. Therefore, as not a unique course nor situation, nothing is identifable.I deal with very tight confidentiality through work all the time. Nothing in the OP would give me cause for concern.

Poohbah · 18/09/2008 20:18

I still agree with Scottish Mummy, Eirlys were there group rules about confidentiality? These groups are closed groups and therefore issues should be dealt with within the group.

Hulababy · 18/09/2008 20:19

Confidentiality is all to do with identifying people and places. If you can't do this, there is no problem.

LackaDAISYcal · 18/09/2008 20:47

OFGS poohbah; she's hardly discussing it with her friends over coffee. surely this is exactly what MN is for...talking over things that you can't do in RL because of confidentiality issues?

what sort of anonymous forum chases people off for discussing RL events? MN would be very empty indeed if RL was a no go area.

I'm sure we've all posted something a bit close to the mark at one point or another, so can we please leave the poor OP alone. It's not like she has named anyone is it?

FairLadyRantALot · 18/09/2008 21:06

why is this whole confidentiality issue raised in this....honest I can NOT understand that at all...especially in this situation...

OP was not talking about a woman she is meant to be supporting...she is talking about a fellow "student" on the course which has dubious opinions...and honestly I am still wondering, why someone with that kind of attitude actually would want to train to become a peersupporter...

IorekByrnison · 18/09/2008 21:21

I agree, this idea of breach of confidentiality is bizarre.

My name isn't really Iorek you know. It's just possible that Eirlys isn't called Eirlys in real life either. She hasn't identified herself in any way.

LackaDAISYcal · 18/09/2008 21:29

and there was me thinking that you were a real live talking polar bear with opposable toes and a nifty line in metalworking

mytetherisending · 18/09/2008 21:32

Since everyone is 'coming out!' I guess I should come clean Tori32 in disguise. So glad that nobody knew me, maybe I have become more wishy washy diplomatic!

LackaDAISYcal · 18/09/2008 21:35

lol

IorekByrnison · 18/09/2008 21:39

Well you're right about the metalwork. And the toes.
