BARIUM ENEMA AND BREASTFEEDING

I am booked in to have a barium enema on Friday and I am still breastfeeding, but my little one won't take to a bottle at all, he is 10 months old and this is really concerning me, I know I need to find out what is wrong but I also don't want my little one to be stressed out because he can't be breastfed. Has anyone here had to go through this and how many days can't you breastfeed for?

VCT: I am not a doctor, but this site has some info

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~azhcKF:1

It does not appear that you need to suspend breastfeeding for this procedure as the barium is not absorbed when administered rectally - but do check with the hospital about this and share the Toxnet info with them.

I hope this helps.

thanks so much tiktok, well if thats the case little one will only have to suffer one day without, because I have to have laxatives the day before

Why stop bf because of laxatives, VCT??

Do check all of this with a medical person, of course, but most meds and medical procedures do not mean suspension of breastfeeding.

There are plenty of laxatives that are not absorbed into the system - that is, they work in the gastro-intestinal tract only. If they only work there, they cannot affect the milk.

Who is telling you all this stuff about you having to stop bf?

The barium isn't absorbed into your baody at all, so theres no need to not bf because of that, or because of the x-rays.

Which laxatives have they given you ? As TikTok says, most are fine when bfing as they don't go into your system, just stay in the gut.

According to this Picolax is fine. It works by drawing water into your bowel, so stays there.

picolax is fine to take. it does not get into the breast milk.

Gosh, it really worries me sometimes that people are told to stop br feeding due to medication. THere are very very few meds which are contraindicated with Br feeding. ^generally

VCT - please tell the x ray department they have misled you, put it in writing, and let the PCT know, and ask for replies. You could prevent other mothers being given this rubbish info
