when do you start the controlled crying thing? cant remember when we did it with dd

Not until at least 6 months!

But perhaps you don't mean controlled crying? But more "leave him to cry for a bit in case he can settle himself"?

I would have thought 5 weeks was too young. What about PUPD?

We always put DD in moses basket asleep and have progressed on to a modified verion of PUPD (more hugging and rocking, basically)at 6 monthsish so she learns to sleep by herself.

5 weeks is WAY too young.
