whats wrong ??

Hi my ds is 6 weeks old. He drinks 6 oz every 3 hours. I change him, feed him and wind him then put him down in his boucer where he just starts to cry, whats wrong ???
when he was born he was snack feeding where the mw told me to be cruel to be kind and make him go his 3 hours where he cries for an hour before he's due again, so with this crying when i put him down and crying for an hour b4 he's due i onlyhave an hour where he is quite happy, but i have a 18 month dd i have to keep happy too. whats going on ????

Can you carry him in a sling? Sounds like he wants cuddles with his mummy to me.

Does he just want a cuddle?

I think three hours is a long time to keep going without a feed - i know snacking drives one mad, but at that age I know neither of mine could manage it. And they do like cuddles, too.

At this young - I'd feed him whenever he wants to keep him happy. My ds used to do this and in hind sight he was prob just hungry. I used to feed him, then top him up with a bottle an ounce at a time then he seemed to hit the full mark and was all smiley. I should have just kept feeding him - but hey ho - I've learnt now.
The thing my hv used to say was - if he still cried when you distract him - eg take him for a walk - then he prob wasn't hungry - but if he still cries - then he is hungry.
Maybe once he's older make him go the 3 hrs. He's only got a little tummy at this age.

My ds would never have been able to go 3 hours between feeds at 6 weeks, tbh. More difficult when you have toddler as well, though. Do you have a sling you could use?

Should have added that I would feed him if it is hunger he is crying for. I can understand about getting him out of the snacking habit when new born, but as he is growing he may well need extra feeds. You might find that he has a few feeds close together then will go for longer inbetween for other feeds. Let him have more milk earlier and see what happens.

Hi thanks everyone, i dont think it is hunger. I make him 6 oz but he takes anything from 4 to 6 oz mostly 4. when i pick him up again after his feed and offer the bottle again he wont take no more, thats why i dont know whats wrong. he's having gripe water to help get his wind up, and i change his nappy before his feed. I sit and cuddle him while feeding which takes about an hour and i just dont know what else it can be, i know he's only 6 weeks but i do lay him under a play gym with music and flashing lights but that only lasts 10 mins before he's sick again.

crozbies, most babies of 6 weeks will not want to stay longer than a few minutes under a baby gym - he's doing well to stay for 10 minutes at a time, without any other change of scene. Maybe he just wants you to hold him and be with him.

Have u tried a dummy? He might be wanting to suck soemthing.
Neither of my kids would go 3 hours without a feed at 6 weeks, but they were pretty much sleepign through, so I accepted being a milk machine durign the day!

Sorry to add another post: maybe the gym with the music and the flashing lights is 'too much' for him. Imagine being stuck somewhere with a light show and sound you couldn't get away from - you'd yell a bit

I do think that he needs more cuddles than just those he gets when you're feeding him (not clear from your posts if you do carry him with you at all?). I'd try using a sling for a bit, see if that helps.
