Formula for new borns

Hi all,

Due to an operation 6 years ago I may not be able to breast feed. Have been told I will not know until the time comes so trying to be prepared with formula!

I don't really want to get a whole pot of formula just incase I can bf (being an optimist). Is there any difference between the ready made cartons?? Also is a matter of trialling them all out to find the best brand for your baby. Anyone find a better brand for mixed feeding??? Apologies for all the questions but all and any help would be much appreciated.

Find myself staring at an array of products in the supermarket then just walking out slightly dazed and confused!

I couldn't BF either of mine, we started on SMA with DD but found that if made aher colicky, sick and constipated so switched at about 3 weeks to Cow & Gate, DS is now 3 weeks and doing really well on C&G, they are all much of a muchness I think.

also, it would be a good idea to make sure you you have some specialist advice breast feeding advice before baby arrives, from say, the NCT or La Leche league, as they may well be able to help you get breastfeeding going

if you are going to formula feed, then buy the one that is available from the all night garage or local supermarket, so if you run out at an ungodly hour, you can get hold of some

ready made cartons are fine to start with

Thank you, brilliant idea on the availability in the local garage, hadn't crossed my mind.

Would love to bf and will be giving it a go, but more of a physical issue (milk ducts or no milk ducts) will get stocked up with a couple of cartons just in case I think.

Don't feel compelled to stock up unless you live very far from shops -hospital should have some while you're there.

ready made cartons are better IMO - seem creamier and less o worry about w/ sterilising.

cow and gate more digestible than sma ime

def get some experienced support lined up befor hand. Everyone doubts themselves starting out - even more so if you've prior reason to suspect a problem

It can take ages for your milk to come through naturally, even if you had no prior breast surgery. My milk took 5 days and another mumsnetter's milk took even longer.

But you can get help here on mumsnet, from the midwives and via the phone from these charity numbers on Hunkers Blog
