Antibiotics while BF?

I have been prescribed erythromycin for a dodgy tooth, forgot to mention to the dentist that I'm BF although I'm not sure he'd have been an expert on it anyway. I have googled and checked Kellymom and the consensus seems to be that it's fine to take while BF. But when I went to Boots to get it, the leaflet in the box said it wasn't suitable to take while BF. Can anyone advise who's right?

Ring the dentist

I had flucloxacillin for mastitis (so was pretty obviously i was bf!) which was fine

You can download a detailed sheet on Antibs whilst breastfeeding from here. It says that Erythromycin is safe.

The manufacturer can only say that it is safe on the leaflet if they have done testing to prove that it is, and have submitted that for approval on their license to market - which is difficult to do.

I have called the dentist and he said he didn't know, he'd have to find out and call me back. So I imagine he's also googling right now!

there's a network of poisons units across teh Uk which also deal with substances during pregnancy - i think it's called Toxbase, medical profs can login online or call a real person, i'd imagine they coudl do this if they weren't sure

It's fine - my obstetrician prescribed it, then my gp when I was bf (and pg). A trace gets into the milk though -- not harmful but my DS got thrush and needed acidophilus (which might be coincidence).

Thanks all, I have double-checked with my stepmum who's a GP (the dentist never did call me back) and she says it's fine to take.

Now the only thing to worry about is whether I can have a glass of wine tonight!
