How do you know if baby is tongue tied?

That is it, really.
I have been having problems with DSs (15 weeks) slow wt gain and constant "nibbling" on breast rather that proper feeding.
Kind MNer suggested possible tongue tie. Do I need to see GP about this or would HV know?

hv would defo know, mine is the one that told me my ds had one when he was about a month old.

you can see it yourself.
when baby sticks tongue out it makes a heart shape at the end.
it is where the skinis attached to the gum.
hv will def be able to see it.

My daughter's tongue-tie was cut at 9 days old. I knew her latch was wrong because she was only able to get the top of my nipples. She had the heart shaped end on her tongue (still does actually and she's now 7 months old). She wasn't able to stick her tongue out far. My midwife found it when she was 1 day old, but a health visitor be able to find out.

hv might know. midwife might know. gp might know. depends really on how much they know about bf! I had various professionals confirm he had tongue tie, others say "hmm, maybe a little" and others saying he didn't. I believed the mw who ran the tongue tie clinic and the surgeon who cut the tt once ds immediately fed better after surgery.

how does it look? well ds couldn't stick his tongue out (it took till I saw other babies that I realised this was unusual!). And when he tried to stick his tongue out, it wasn't pointy or even rounded, but a little like the picture on this page, but not as severe.

Thanks to everybody! I think DS is NOT tongue tied - darn, I was hoping for easy fix!

Oh well, I will persevere with Mr Nibble who behaved v well today, so there is hope afterall...

might be worth asking a bf expert as there are lots of reasons a baby might have trouble of this kind. do you have a local bf cafe? or ask mw/ hv for a recommendation of someone to hve a look at him? good luck!
