getting pregant while still breast feeding.

Son is ten months old - love breast feeding (Still feed about five times in a 24 hour period) but want to get pregant again as soon as possible. My periods have not returned yet. Those people with more experience than I, do I need to cut back to two / three feeds just at night or do I need to stop or together to return to 'normal service' so to speak?

I think it's hard to say as it varies so much from person to person, and also between different pregnancies. I got pg the second time when I was still bf, my periods returned at about 8 months that time and the second time at about 1 year, I was still bf 2-3 times a day both times.

Personally, my periods came back when DS stopped feeding at night. It varies from person to person, though.

Hi. I agree that it is just different for each person. To be honest, your DS will probably cut down soon naturally, so I wouldn't worry too much. I was told that breastfeeding was only a contraceptive for the first 4-6 months (basically until you start weaning). My periods returned when my DD was 8 weeks old and I was exclusively breastfeeding! We don't use contraceptive, but nor are we really trying iyswim. We are just letting nature do its thing. But my DD is 6.5months and still not pregnant despite periods returning at 8 weeks. I think that if you don't get pregnant straight away, maybe you body hasn't recovered enough to have another baby yet? I am no expert though, thats just my way of thinking! So I might be talking rubbish. I have never done the whole "trying for a baby" thing as my DD was conceived on the pill.

If it was me, I would just continue with the breastfeeding, so your DS gets the best he can while he is the only one. And then just see what happens. You don't want to end up regtretting not breastfeeding as you enjoy it that much!

That said, you have got to 10months, which is more than alot of people, and you have done so well. Nobody would blame you to stop now.

Oh and the other thing is, if you carry on another 2 months, you can go straight to cows milk, so you don't need to bother with formula.

It is completely different for everyone.

My ds is 2.8 and feeds 4/5 times in 24 hrs. I have had my periods back since he was 14 months, but haven't managed to conceive (well I did, but lost it really early) despite trying all this time.

I have a regular cycle, but now don't ovulate until much later into the cycle leaving too short a time for implantation.

So in answer to your OP, you won't find out until you try!

Jammi - can only speak for myself, I got pg while I was still bf DD1 and I was 43! I don't think bf affects fertility at all - once you start periods/ovulating again you can get pg whether bf or not.

StealthPolarBear · 08/07/2008 18:26

My DS is almost 15mo, still no sign of a period

barbamama · 08/07/2008 18:28

Mine came back at 10m while still on 4 feeds a day - no change in feeding pattern or anything and no night feeds for months. First time was 5m when stopped night feeds. Seems to be little rhyme or reason to it.

merryorange · 08/07/2008 20:32

I got pg with my 2nd while 1st still bf twice a day, but was having periods for 2 months. Tried to get pg with 4th for ages while bf 3rd, but didn't fall till I stopped and then periods came back.
So to sum up, couldn't get pg without my period, wether bf or not.
Just to say I still bf 4th 5 times a day and no periods. Could quite happily live without them.

what spb said. And I am 38.

alittleteapot and I had a thread about this a little while ago, we both ended up going to Fertility Friend (google it) and checking signs for ovulation. Suspect I am, though no AF. Worth checking out.

My periods came back at 5 & 6 months & I started charting with FF then. After ds I ovulated realtively late & irregularly (between day 17 & 25) until I night weaned (at 16 months). The first cycle after night weaning I ovulated on day 14 & conceived - night weaning really helped. I'm still feeding ds 4-5 times a day (16 weeks pregnant).

I've just found I'm pregnant and just turned 38 and my DD is 20 months. In two of the previous 3 months I'm pretty sure I conceived (I get morning sickness very very early) but the egg didn't implant whether age or BFing I don't know. I cut my DD BFs down to only morning and night 6 weeks ago, quite distressing for both of us as fed on demand until then. If I hadn't got pregnant this month I was going to wean her as I can't really wait due to age. I've contacted LLL and it is fact that SOME women can't conceive while BFing although many women can.

However my AF returned when she was 7 months old and I've been ovulating regularly.

I would set yourself a time limit, as you don't want to resent your child in maybe stopping you get pregnant again. On the other hand I felt what happens if I never have another child and so will never BF again. Its a tricky choice.
