Grrrrr. It's so annoying! Is there nothing we can do?

Sometimes I think certain people won't be happy with ads for formula until the voice over is changed to:

"If you are a selfish cow and cannot/will not BF for as long as your baby wants to, you might want to try a bottle of this old shit, it is really really awful and contains all sorts of terrible things but hey they have to drink something after all or they just won't sleep..."

is that more honest?

thumbwitch · 04/07/2008 19:45

and yes, other fat-soluble substances, including many flavours such as curry, will go through into the breastmilk in the fat. This also applies to non-food fat-soluble toxins, such as pesticides and dioxins, but even with that possibility, breastmilk is still considered to be better.

constancereader · 04/07/2008 19:46

No CrushWithEyeliner, but I WOULD be happy with some information that stated what was in the formula I gave my baby, and which one was actually best for them.

thumbwitch · 04/07/2008 19:47

breastmilk contains much more than just nutrients - there are all the enzymes and anti-bacterial elements as well that are not present in formula. So it will always have the edge.

juuule · 04/07/2008 19:47

I think you might be right, crushwitheyeliner

FrannyandZooey · 04/07/2008 19:49

So what information did people get from this advert? How did it help you make a decision about whether it was a good milk to feed your baby?

Idobelieveinfairies · 04/07/2008 19:50

i really really really didn't no that about breast-milk franny..however that doesn't mean i would have chosen to breast-feed over formula feeding...just like how the adverts wouldn't sway me either.

Can't believe i was so constantly told by health proffessionals to make sure i have an really good diet. Obviously the better the food, the better the milk...but crikey..i bet they put a few people off!

FrannyandZooey · 04/07/2008 19:53

That's a nasty thought Idobelieve
obviously the more you can look after yourself while breastfeeding (or just being a mother in general!) the better
but it won't affect the quality of your milk unless you were seriously malnourished

Idobelieveinfairies · 04/07/2008 19:53

it said to me...we are cow and gate, we sell this milk, come and check us out! ..if i were to be with child...i would have looked at it in the shop, read the label, asked hv advice, see what they use in maternity, ask on a great forum like this. May well have bought it..who knows?? if baby seemed happy, kept it down....i would have thought hey presto!..good milk for my baby.

Idobelieveinfairies · 04/07/2008 19:54

what is a nasty thought franny?

how on earth could anyone make that assumption in an advertisement CR? - what is best for YOUR baby will obviously not be best for another. Do you want some kind of bespoke advertising campaign?

constancereader · 04/07/2008 20:00

No, I want some information.

It doesn't seem wildly outrageous to me that I should want to know which food was actually best for my baby rather than which one had the best advert. .

CrushWithEyeliner · 04/07/2008 20:01

but potassium and iron DO boost immunity smc, they are present in the milk....how on is that conning me?
If DC has problems absorbing them from the formula that is not the formula companies fault is it? Some babies do not absorb nutrients fro BreastMilk either for various reasons....

Idobelieveinfairies · 04/07/2008 20:02

so who is to blame for all this? who should be giving us more info on formula?

CrushWithEyeliner · 04/07/2008 20:03

CR how do you want to be told what food/milk is best for your child? You have to kinda make that decision yourself through trial and error and if you like educating yourself about nutrition.

What has it got to do with having the best advert?

FrannyandZooey · 04/07/2008 20:04

I meant, it was a nasty thought that they had put people off breastfeeding with the insistence on having a good diet, Idobelieve

CrushWithEyeliner · 04/07/2008 20:07

Why not swallow it whole SM?

Idobelieveinfairies · 04/07/2008 20:08

oh right, it really is..obviously (and hopefully)there may not be many like me who thought like this though!..lol

WTF? It's just an advert, I BB my DD and it doesn't bother me at all.....FF babies parents do have to decide which one to buy though. Although an advert would not help me choose if i had chosen to FF. DD 14mths loves the ad though(yes she does watch a bit of telly)

constancereader · 04/07/2008 20:10

Well I knew that breastmilk was the best, but I ended up formula feeding part of the time.

There is no independent comparison of formulas which would have told me which of those ingredients was good for my baby or otherwise. Believing what the product makers told me was not really good enough. Aptamil says CONTAINS IMMUNOFORTIS ffs. I don't know what that it, do you? All the claims they make are CLAIMS. I want someone to do a study to tell me what in that massive list of chemically sounding ingredients works nutritionally for my baby. What is a bulking agent. What makes it taste sweet and is it better for my baby than what is in the other one. Honestly, advertising was never going to give me the information I wanted.
