Breastfeeding struggles - newborn

Looking for some breastfeeding advice please. I’ve just had my second daughter, she is currently a week old. I successfully breastfed my first for 2 years although we did really struggle to begin with. I thought this time round would be so much easier and it is in ways however we are still struggling. She has a really shallow latch which despite following midwives advice doesn’t appear to be improving - it is making me rather sore. She also has this habit of falling asleep whenever I put her on the breast. Will have a couple sucks then fall asleep so feel like she’s not getting a nice long feed. Last issue is the constant hiccuping and grunting. I know newborns are noisy but I can’t help but feel like she’s in some sort of discomfort. If anyone has any advice on any of the points it would be very much appreciated. I’m determined to carry on.

The midwife only briefly looked, didn’t feel in baby’s mouth. Said that if she had a tongue tie her tongue would appear heart shaped when she tries to lift it etc and it doesn’t appear that way so she was fairly confident that there is no tongue tie

That's simply not true.

Please get her assessed properly, and/or see a breastfeeding specialist. Someone needs to feel in her mouth, visually we cannot say for certain there is no TT.

While there is no research on genetics and TT, I can tell you most of the second/subsequent babies I see with it have an older sibling who either did have TT or the mum will tell me about their BF issues which show classic TT symptoms.

I would get her assessed properly. My youngest DD should have been checked I think because we never had as good a latch as with my eldest and always took a few goes to get her on properly. I never did because she was gaining weight fine. Things did resolve themselves too when she got to about 2 months old, and feeding got much easier after that. I read afterwards that mild tongue tie can just get better as the baby grows
