3 week old EBF 3 days no poo!

Anybody found themselves in a similar situation. It’s now been 72 hours since her last poo, is exclusively breastfed. Had her weighed today and no concerns, gaining brilliantly. Took her to the GP who also had no concerns, did all the usual checks and said come back if still hasn’t had a poo in 2 days. Having enough wet nappies, is settled and doesn’t seem in pain. If she is getting enough milk why isn’t she pooing? What could cause this? I know they say breastfed babies can go longer with not pooing but this is only normal after 6 weeks from what I’ve read online.

No poo because there is no waste with the breast feeding,

If your baby is weeing as usual, you’ve seen a GP and they’re feeding well then I wouldn’t be worried. You’re right - they should poo every day before 6 weeks.
But you get the occasional outlier. So you were 100% correct to get her checked out- but I’d bet she’ll do a massive blow out in the night or tomorrow! Try some tummy massage.

My ebf DS got to 6 days with no poos when he was a newborn. I was just about to try phoning for an emergency GP appointment when he produced a mahoosive one. He wasn't remotely distressed. Don't worry!

My Grandson was EBF and he had the same problem. They told my daughter not to worry but if he hadn’t gone by Day 5 to give him Lactulose. They gave her a prescription , he ended up having the lactulose. Even tho’ a year old now he still has problems. EBF babies can just be like this.

My DS went ages without a poo. I was really worried and they were fine. Went through a couple of nappies when it did all come out at once.

You've done all the right things by seeing the GP. If they are not concerned then I'd be happy. Think we were prescribed lactulose too. But never ended up using it.

Obviously if anything changes, ring the GP or 111. Sounds like you are doing everything you should

Thank you everyone! Yes GP mentioned Lactulose who he said it’s not ideal as can cause more problems like colic/discomfort with gas etc so really want to avoid at all costs! I just find it odd she’s been pooing so much every day to suddenly just come to a halt! Fingers crossed tomorrow we see a big poo and my mind can rest!

Put her into a beautiful outfit, white is a good choice, something you absolutely love… you can guarantee within half an hour she’ll poop and the outfit will be ruined!

Also wear nice clothes yourself and put her in a sling. Not that I'm speaking from experience at all..

More seriously, it does happen with bf babies - I remember DD1 pooed every four or five days at one point. Often in the bath, so maybe try a bath (though I guess you might have already!)

Yes bath is a good idea! Bath followed by massage. Breastmilk is a laxative anyway so I wouldn’t want to introduce lactulose to their tummy at this age.

Dd1 went every 3 days like clockwork, dd2 every 5 and leaving the house on those days was risky!

Yes, @110APiccadilly wear a lovely expensive top, take her to a very busy shop wearing your new very expensive baby carrier.
She WILL poop. You’ll be absolutely mortified and will have to leg it out of the store, leaving other shoppers gasping at the smell… then you’ll have to change her in the boot of your car, and you’ll get poo all over yourself and the carpet in the boot, which you’ll have to scrub with detergent when you get home.
You’ll return home minus your top and all your neighbors will see you in your bra. All her clothes, your clothes and the very expensive baby carrier will be transported home in a tesco carrier bag which you’ll find stuffed in a pocket in your car somewhere. It will take you 3 days to get over the ordeal before you’re ready to leave the house again…

Poo Tuesday was a thing for one of my EBF babies. Like clockwork. Every Tuesday. That was all. 😆

My oldest is now 32. Can remember him going a whole 8 days without a poo at 6 weeks. Was checked out, no tummy bloating or hardness, advised to give a little diluted orange juice but nothing made him go until he was ready. No discomfort just an enormous poo when he was ready. EBF means almost no waste..as long as lots of wet nappies and no tenderness then should be fine.
