Getting Up The Duff Whilst BFing

I know this probably sounds crazy, but I'm enjoying the whole baby thing so much that I am planning number 2 when DS is only 5 months old!

Also, I'm sure fate is telling me something as have just found a potential nanny who wants to start when I was planning to go back to work mid-April and only wants a NINE MONTH contract. What could be more perfect - going back to work with a twinkle in my eye, knowing that the end is in sight again!

However, the potential spanner in the works is me continuing to breast feed DS. Bearing in mind I'll start him on solids at 6 months and he will be 7-8 months when I go back to work, so perhaps only getting B fed morning and evening, do you think getting preg will be possible?

Tell me about your experiences of getting pregnant for the second time please....

Haven't got pregnant while breastfeeding, but wouldn't mind Am still feeding DS (between two and four times a day and occasionally a bit at night). AF returned when DS was 6 months old, so hoping to be able to conceive sooner rather than later!

Good luck (sounds like fate is telling you to go for it ) xxx

I fell pregnant when B/F DS2 age 7 months. He was still having breastfeeds at all mealtimes but was sleeping all night. My periods had alreay comeback when I was exclusively feeding. Happened to me every time.

Gem13 · 30/01/2005 17:20

I got pregnant while still breastfeeding DS 4x a day when he was 9 months.

Periods returned at 5 months both times. DS went on to solids at 4 months and was sleeping through from 9 weeks. DD started solids at 6 months and was sleeping through from about 10 months. So didn't seem to be any logic in it.

HunkerMunker · 30/01/2005 17:22

When mine came back, I was still pretty much exclusively breastfeeding (DS was having bits of food to gum, but was still feeding as much as ever - breastmilk gannet that he is!).

Clayhead · 30/01/2005 18:01

I got pregnant with ds when still bf dd.

SenoraPostrophe · 30/01/2005 18:08

It varies though - my periods still haven't come back - ds is 12 months and I bf 2 or 3 times a day.

ah ha, so it is possible...still no sign of my periods though, but then i'm still breastfeeding about 6 times a day.

I was gutted I have been BFing DD exclusively since birth and have just had my third period (I don't count the post bleed in that) thought I would be free of them for a while. Doc said it's because she sleeps through the night!

That's really unlucky! My DS has been sleeping for 6 to 7 hour stretches at night for 2 months, but still no sign of my period...

Trying myself and from what I can ascertain it is luck of the draw.
dd been sleeping through pretty much since 6-8wks, feeding 1x am and 1x pm for about 4months and still no sign of period.

oatcake · 31/01/2005 16:49

it's only an effective contraceptive if you bf exclusively and at a minimum of 4 hourly, preferably 2 hourly...

so, not that effective when you've got such good sleepers...

HunkerMunker · 31/01/2005 16:58

I have an OKish sleeper and horrible AF. Dammit!

root · 31/01/2005 16:59

I wonder if there's any way of kick-starting your periods without giving up BFing...

Mine came back when I started taking fenugreek to try to boost my supply when I was going back to work. Not sure if that's linked (probably isn't!).

sweetkitty · 31/01/2005 20:57

yea Doc said it's only really effective if the baby is constant at your breast ie every few hours

mine aren't too bad only 3 days long so shouldn't moan too much
