Breastfeeding in public - when did it get easier for you?

Erm, that's it really!

Didn't bf DD so am very surprised to be feeding DS at 11wks. But I find it really hard to feed when we go out. He's so easily distracted and comes on and off the breast, looking all around. Which makes it hard for me not to flash everyone in sight.

I'm guessing everyone feels like this at first. So when does it get easier? Or do you just not care after a while?

I know onepiece, the littlest things can really make a difference can't they. I was in a large, busy cafe and really didn't want to put anyone off their lunch or anything so it was lovely that he said that and made me not rush DS's feed.

I always found that if anyone was getting an eyeful looking over, giving them a big smile usually worked to put them off making any negative comments. And if they weren't going to make a negative comment then they'd smile back! It also solved the problem of when little old ladies/parents of older children used to look wistfully over and then look away, embarrassed. I would smile at them to let them know it was ok to look IYSWIM. Now I'm the mum smiling wistfully and trying not to look like a lunatic!!

Fed him in a restaurant today for the first time - I was sitting with my back to most people and I put my jacket around my shoulders and did the vest-under-my-top thing. It went well for a few mins then he pulled off and started yelling so people were definitely looking over then! I chickened out and fed him in the car . But before I would have taken him out to the car straight away so I guess you could call it progress. We'll get there!

Good progress fleecy.

Well done fleecy! I had one of those breastfeeding ponchos up until dd was about 3 months old, then left it somewhere on holiday and never looked back. By the time she was 6 months I was wearing a strapless dress to a wedding and flipping the bodice down to pop her on; it does get easier!
