Over feeding 12 week old? Really rapid weight gain…

Hi all,

Looking for some advice!

My 12 week old baby was 6lb 11oz at birth and I had planned to breastfeed but unfortunately wasn’t able to solely as baby’s weight kept dropping. I now combo feed with pumped milk and formula (mostly formula due to low supply)

She seems to be rapidly gaining weight so much so that I’ve become a little concerned we are over feeding her. I don’t have a baby scale but when I weighed myself and then weighed myself holding her she was around 13lbs. Is it normal to have doubled her birth weight already?😮

She currently has 4oz every 2.5-3 hours. I’ve tried to give more oz and spread over more hours but if she has more than 4oz at a time she will be sick.

She is getting around 28-30oz in total in 24 hours.

I wouldn’t be worried. My baby was similar, and his trend of being the biggest in our NCT class was sustained.

To add: your volumes seem fine and they will plateau at that. It’s a good sign that she’ll vomit if she eats too much in one go - if that’s happening, how can she be over feeding?!

If you're pace feeding then I wouldn't be worried. My 75th centile baby crawled to the boob by herself after being born and then basically stayed there, apart from when she was projectile vomiting from gorging. She lost 0.2% body weight and was 98th centile within weeks. She's steadied now 😅 just feed on demand and pace feed with the bottles.

Have you contacted your HV for review?

It's fine just carry on, you know when she's hungry and when she isn't.
Overfeeding is when they're sick after the feed. If you think she's draining the bottles too fast then try a slower teat or pause halfway to change position, or burp etc

Of course babies will get fat, they don't move around yet. They usually follow their growth centiles in the red book but no big deal if she's big as long as nappies ok and generally content
