Is this true?

I have low thyroid & take thyroxine. I also bf & my doc told me that this will have a negative on thyroird levels - but I have low thyroid as I have an auto-immune reaction against my thyroid - iyswim.

Bot sure
What does he mean? You need to take more thyroxine when bf? Or you might feel worse?

I saw an endocrinologist during pg and while bf for 2 babies and noone ever mentioned this

I needed to take more thyroxine when pg but not when bf

Not sure

I've had a scout round, and can't find anything at all to support what he said. Did find some research that said that if you'd had thyroid issues in pregnancy, bfing would extend the time that that continued, but nothing else.

thanks for your replies.

my low thyroid started when preg & I took thyroxine. My dd is now 8 months. I had a blood test which showed I had lots of antibodies against my own thyroid & my doc said bf would make the situation worse!

I think thats a very different case to the 'normal' hypothyroidism you get during/after pregnancy, as thats not autoimmune based. I think theres a good Yahoo thyroid group and the people on there are ultraknowledgable (but thats only from people with coeliac disease related thyroid probs talking about it)

TheBlonde · 20/06/2008 12:28

hmmm I don't see why bf would cause you to make antibodies against your thyroid

does your GP want you to stop bf?

cupsoftea · 20/06/2008 14:15

thanks for the info

my gp didn't mention stopping bf & has always been supportive before

I've had low thyroid for over 20yrs and two pgs and bfing has made no difference to it whatsoever. I take the same dose of thyroxine as I did immediately after diagnosis.

I take thyroxine too. My TSH was low after I had DS but it does start to go up again. I haven't heard that bf makes any difference to TSH levels and I can't see how anti TPO antiodies would be esp produced whilst bf. Have you had all the usual bloods done? TSH fT3 fT4 and anti thyroid peroxidase antibodies?

thanks for replies - I had the results of blood tests but she didn't give the figures - I'll ask her next time for them.
