Reflux spasms but otherwise happy? Sandifers syndrome? Not convinced

Hi everyone, looking for a bit of advice from other mums.

My little boy is 15 weeks old. He’s formula fed and currently on HiPP Organic, which we switched to from Aptamil when he was about 5 weeks old. He’s been on HiPP for around 10 weeks now and generally seemed to tolerate it well.

He’s always been a bit of a spitty baby, but the spit-up seems to have got worse over the last couple of weeks. He’s quite a hungry boy and usually takes 6oz every 3–4 hours.

A couple of days ago we ended up in A&E because he was having some strange arching/spasm-like movements during feeds. The hospital mentioned possible Sandifer syndrome related to reflux, but I’m not totally convinced because he doesn’t seem to be in pain. They prescribed him omeprazole however I’ve been reluctant to give him this as he isn’t in pain with the reflux. He rarely cries, sleeps really well (9pm–6am most nights), feeds well and generally seems happy. He’s just very wriggly at times, especially around feeds.

Other things I’ve noticed:

  • Quite a lot of bubbling at the mouth after feeds
  • Lots of leg kicking and wriggling
  • He doesn’t seem to like being sat upright much and often prefers lying down

Because the reflux/spit-up has increased recently, I’m wondering whether it might be worth reviewing his milk. Has anyone switched from HiPP to goat milk formula or something else and found it helped with reflux/wind?

I’m a bit reluctant to change because HiPP is meant to be quite gentle and he’s been mostly fine on it for weeks, but just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences.

Any thoughts or similar stories would be really appreciated!

Hi OP,
Bit of a different situation as my baby is breastfed, but she had the same spasms which were caused by severe silent acid reflux. She was also in a lot of constant pain with hers, although the spasms would also happen when she didn’t appear to be in any pain because I think sadly she started to get used to the pain and discomfort. So I wouldn’t necessarily rule out the fact that he could be in a bit of pain, sometimes they cope very well! We were prescribed infant Gaviscon, which worked on the whole really well, I would suggest maybe you try that first as it’s normally the first line and not as harsh of a medication as Omeprazole. As for the formula I can’t comment sorry!
