Is it okay to breastfeed from one side only?

I have a 4 week old and initially wanted to EBF but due to low supply and milk being delayed coming in that wasn’t possible for us and I have also been topping up with formula which I’m now fine with doing.

My question regarding BF is is it okay that my little one only really likes feeding from my left side? I’m not sure why and have tried to split between both equally but she becomes fussy and won’t latch on the right side and when I pump I produce less milk on that side too. I know this is probably because she is on the breast less.

Is it okay to just let her feed from the left side and work on building up supply for that breast and essentially let the other side ‘dry up’? Or should I keep persevering with both? Sorry if stupid questions, this is all new to us!

It's definitely possible. The topping up with formula is more likely to cause problems longer term. It would probably be a good idea to see a lactation consultant if you can afford it

Try lying baby on a cushion with her body under your right arm so she’s feeding in the same position as when she’s feeding on the left boob.
And I’d worry about mastitis on the right if you’re still feeding from the left.

I had to do this. Reoccurring mastitis on one side and baby wouldn't take a bottle which meant I just fed on one side and the other side dried up. Think you just have to go with what works for you and your baby Good luck.

My baby had a side preference and I just went with it. It didn’t cause any supply problems, but since stopping feeding him I now have 1 boob a cup size bigger than the other.

I used a rugby hold so that DD fed the same way round on both sides, as she didn’t like feeding on my right breast otherwise. Good luck!
