Different formula or cows milk?

Evening all,

DS will be 1 in 3 weeks and up to now has been doing really well on SMA Little Steps. We finished our last tub a few days ago, but due to the SMA recall, we can only find the Follow On formula tubs.

The problem is, he really doesn’t seem to like it and we’re struggling to get him to finish his bottles. DH gave him cows milk today which he drank with no problem, so now he thinks we should move him on to cows milk full time and give him his vitamin drops just in case.

Given that he’s so close to his birthday, I wouldn’t usually worry about that. But I read that it’s best not to switch earlier due to potential iron deficiency, and I know there’s no iron in his drops. I’m wondering if we should switch to a different brand, or am I being overly cautious?

Would you use a different formula, or start cows milk a little early?

3 weeks early is nothing. Vitamins A,C and D are recommended from now until age 5

3 weeks is nothing. If he eats well then he’ll be getting sufficient iron from his diet. So yes I’d switch to cows milk and yes keep the vitamin drops.

Thank you all, sorry for the delay in coming back!

He’s been having the cows milk and really enjoying it, so that’s a relief. He’s a really good eater, so knowing that will cover iron makes me feel better.

However, I did realise he’s drinking way too much milk- up to 24oz a day! 😳 He sometimes misses his afternoon bottle though and he isn’t bothered by it, so we gave him some water instead which he was happy enough to drink.

I’m trying to decide whether it’s better to reduce the remaining bottles or drop another in time- he has 6oz after waking, before his nap and before bed. So still probably more than he needs.

When my 2 starting dropping daytime milk feeds i gave a snack and drink of water instead. By 11 months they just had 2 feeds per day

I would drop the first one and go straight to breakfast wirh a cup of milk.

This. Start offering a cup from now on. They don't need a bottle from one.

I’d start by dropping the morning one, he doesn’t need it now - he should have a good breakfast instead with milk/yoghurt included in that.

With my DDs we dropped the before nap bottle next because we found that they were happy to nap straight after lunch without a bottle , and they would have an afternoon snack with a drink of milk in a cup instead when they woke up. They had both dropped naps by 2 anyway.

The bedtime one is the hardest to drop because it helps them feel sleepy, but we transitioned to warm milk in a cup first then changed that to a drink of milk downstairs before bath etc
