SMA formulas recall

Ilovewheelychairs · 06/01/2026 10:08

I’ve done a search and can’t find any topics with the same title, but Nestle have done a big recall of lots of the SMA formulas, including Alfamino due to the POSSIBLE presence of a heat resistant toxin. This applies to both powder formulas and ready made.

List of affected formulas here:

This is why it’s so important to make formula that can be, with water over 70c. It’s why the nhs don’t recommend perfect preps.

Formula is not a sterile product. It makes me worry so much when people don’t make it up properly. You have to think of it like meat - it needs cooking.

Its particularly worrying if this toxin is heat resistant

Apparently this toxin is not eliminated by hot temperatures.

Really not good.

Many are though so it’s so important to make formula properly.

Apology @LIZS! I did a quick search but couldn’t see another thread!

Yes, the issue is this toxin is particularly heat resistant. So even making the formula up correctly with the hot shot doesn’t eliminate the possibility of babies becoming severely unwell. Also, some of the ready made cartons are also affected and they will have been heat treated to a very high temperature. It’s a really important and worrying recall. Luckily none of my tins are affected!

I've just seen it on the lunchtime news and morning tv showed it too. So hopefully people will become aware

Bumping

additional info about the reason for the recall:

Cereulide is a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus and is highly heat-resistant, meaning it is not destroyed by cooking, boiling water or preparing infant milk. If ingested, it can cause a rapid onset of illness. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
