How many feeds at 9 months?

I've gone back to work 3 days a week but want to carry on giving DS my milk. I did start with the expressing at work but wasn't getting more than around 3-4 oz from both breasts. It was soul destroying and took aaaages so I stopped.

So now, i feed in the morning, leave him with water, juice (food of course) and all things calcium in the day. I then feed again before bed. This means he only gets 2 feeds each day. At the moment, when I'm off work, he somethimes grazes at the boob in the day, but I am considering stopping that too!

Question is, is 2 feeds enough? I spoke to a friend today who is feeding her 10 month old 5-6 times a day, including night feeds! I'm worried that I'm depriving him!

I know that with my son who is 8 months..I am feeding him 4 times a day (one of those which seems to be a smaller feed). I would think that if he's getting solid foods in and he seems to be gaining weight etc and getting enough iron that he is fine...but that is something you would probably want to ask your doctor about. What about feeding him milk? He can drink that instead of your breastmilk.

Cows milk? I didn't think you could give milk as a drink til 1 year? He has it on his breakfast etc, just not as a drink (yet!)

cows milk can be drank from 6 mths but baby may not be able to digest properly so follow on milks are advised if not able to breast feed

as they contain all the iron and nutrients that wont get from cows milk or breast if not able to feed

my ds was on 5 bottles a day at 6 mths 8oz each

i would suggest that he may need more milk for vitamins pupose that he wont absorb from all foods he is still very young really

bubblagirl · 11/06/2008 18:46

i meant 9 mths he would have bottle when woke in morning so around 5 then another at lunch then one for nap late afternoon one for bed and one at night

we cut down to 2 bottles when he was a yr but that was his choice would drink no more than that

my baby is 8 months, her routine is
8am bottle(or whenever she wakes)
8.30/9 baby cereal mixed with some milk from 1st bottle
12 jar and yogurt
1 oclock bottle
4/5 jar and yogurt
7.30 bottle before bed

in between i give her lots of water so she is not thirsty and some little snacks, toast and baby crisps

I'm very interested as this is precisely what I plan to do!

Sorry - no help!

I'm also giving him abidec vitamins (have been since 6 months), does this help?

DD 9mo is on 3 bf during the day and usually one during the night.

If I can't be there to feed her she will drink 2/3oz from a cup.

I asked HV today and she said giving DD small amounts of full fat cows milk is fine as long as it is not her main source of milk and she hasn't had any problems with it in her cereal etc.

akent · 11/06/2008 19:39

At eight months DD1 was having three breastfeeds a day but no dairy. My feeling would be that two feeds plus all things calcium should be fine.

mollysawally · 11/06/2008 19:46

DD is 7 months, has two bottles a day. One at night, one in morning. She was only drinking a couple of ounces in the day and seemed natural to cut it out.

she has water in the day from her sippy cup.

She has about 4oz of cows milk mixed in with her porridge/weetabix/redy brek.

I try to get as much calcuim in her food as possible like adding cheese to scrambled egg, plenty of yogurhts and I give her grated cheese as finger food.

hayley2u · 11/06/2008 19:51

my dd sometimes only has 2 bottles too, we usually get away with one at lunch. as long as the3y are getting enough fluids and food theres no problem

mooki · 11/06/2008 21:55

When my 8.5 month DD was really fighting her feeds my HV said it was fine if she only had 2 feeds a day.

In the end I decided to offer her expressed milk in a cup in the afternoon - she has 3-4 oz - and a dreamfeed at 10.30 as well as her morning and bedtime feeds.

Neney1 · 11/06/2008 22:34

I think I'll carry on with the 2 main feeds, he's been doing this for 4 days now with no ill effects and sleeping through 7-7 for the first time ever!!

However, it sounds like the measley 3-4 oz I'm expressing is actually a good amount to give in a cup in the afternoon. So my plan is to carry on expressing at work (gets me a chance to sit down!) and then review it again in a month...

Blondie, let me know what you do decide...!

Thanks all for the help, will keep watch for more advice though!
