Normal newborn or CMPA?

Looking for some advice about my 2.5 week old. He is exclusively breastfed.

Around a week ago I noticed he was developing some spots on his face - looked like whiteheads/pimples. The spots got steadily worse and are now pretty bad. I will try to attach pic. They are on his cheeks, nose, eyelids, chin, not so much his forehead. Not on any other part of his body. The redness around them comes and goes but doesn’t seem linked to feeds, more linked to whether he is hot/cold/crying. I have seen GP who said it is just baby acne, and it does look like photos of baby acne I have seen online, but also looks like a few photos I have seen of CMPA rash, which has got me worried about CMPA.

In terms of how he is in himself… I would say generally he is a fairly happy baby. He feeds well and doesn’t seem in pain after feeding. He sleeps very well during the day and was sleeping pretty well at night, but the last 2/3 nights he has been quite unsettled 2-5am, not wanting to feed and seeming like he might be uncomfortable, kicking a lot and grunting. Possibly straining to pass wind? His nappies seem fairly normal, yellow seedy poos, occasionally possibly some mucus? Not a large amount and not every nappy, a few ‘strings’ in the odd nappy. He doesn’t really spit up at all, once or twice he has brought up a tiny bit of milk through his nose. Never vomits. He sneezes and hiccups a normal amount I would say. Occasionally sounds a little bit mucusy after a feed but nothing regular. Nothing that really makes me suspect reflux or colic.

Any insight into whether this sounds like CMPA or normal newborn stuff? I’m not keen to rush into giving up dairy as chocolate biscuits playing an important part in getting me through the newborn trenches!! But obviously would do immediately if it was necessary for him.

Thanks!

I don't know about the rash, but my DS had CMPA at the same age and the main symptom was mucus, amount variable, and sometimes streaked with a small amount of blood. He was in a lot of discomfort, too.

ah poor thing. How did the discomfort manifest? Do you remember how often he had blood in his nappy?

Lots of back arching, writhing and kicking, grunting and crying. It would go on for a long time. The blood appeared in maybe a third of his nappies, but the mucous was very frequent, and sometimes in very large amounts.

Was the article of any use @Mattietoes?
