Expressing- how much per session?

My one week old is currently in NICU and NG tube fed. I’ve been expressing milk since he his birth and wondering how much I should be getting per session? I’ve breastfed my older kids but never bothered expressing before and unsure what to expect. Currently getting 80-100mls per session and trying to express every 2-3hrs.

That sounds good to me! I still only get that much and mine is 4 months. Mine is a little and often baby so it fits with how many times he nurses. After the first few weeks, most babies are expected to need about 750ml per day, with quite a wide variation depending on baby.

Gosh that’s loads!! I was getting like 20ml at a stretch at that age.

Thanks to you both. I really wasn’t sure at all what I should be getting. He is slowly building up what he can stomach just now, so hopefully by the time he is breastfeeding my supply keeps up with him.

Hopefully little one will be out of hospital soon and takes to nursing then it will be easier. If he takes to nursing, you might have to be careful about pumping alongside because you could end up with an over supply and get sore. Sending you some virtual hugs for what must be a difficult time.

Remember you can freeze it so just keep pumping and storing.

Once my engorgement stopped I just didn’t get a let down.

Thank you all

yes I’m sure they give bags at hospital to freeze? Or you can buy them and send home to freeze.

It’s a really tough time, make sure you’re looking after yourself too
