Does BF make you sweat more?

Am very proud of myself for bf for a month (almost gave up after 1 week and have had mastitis twice). Am generally enjoying it but am very aware that by the afternoon my armpits are really smelly. I have never had a B.O problem in the past and was very active pre pregnancy. However, now, despite a shower and liberally applying deoderant every morning I have distinctly stinky pits by about lunch time and by the time I go to bed at night they are horrid (no time for another shower by the way). All I'm doing is sitting down so why have I developed B.O?

Anyone else experience this?

Same here

It did at first, not sure if that is bfing though or just post pg homones. My sweat used to smell of stale milk, which bore a remarkable resemblance to bf baby poos, I used to wake up in the night gagging.

Bizarrely though, 10 months on I now sweat less than I did before pg. I used to have to wear super strength deodorant and I would still have wet patches. Now I use a crystal deodorant and have no problems.

i did this too...don't think it was bf particularly, but more a settling of hormones...has happenned quite a few times in the first 18 months of all my kids lives...sort of flares up, then settles again.

you could try using a diffrent deoderant (i find the dove creme one great!) but i'm sure that no one else notices it like you do.....make sure you wear clean clothes very day to minimise the risk of being stinky...

try not to worry...it'll setle down soon i'm sure.

well done on peresevering with the bf.

yeah i would wake up sweating conkers as my mum would say. calmed down now tho after 4 months bfing, i feel like i got hot whilst being preg and my body never cooled down again. before pg i used to have the heating on in summer, now i have to open all the windows and never ever need a coat. strange!

BigTummyMummy · 24/05/2008 08:53

Yeah I think it is hormones because I sweated loads for a few months after birth, it finally stopped thank goodness!!! Shame it happens to be hot at the moment as well for you!

ok god yes and stink too. Mine lasted for as long as I was bf-ing. I read soemthign about the milk glands and sweat glands being linked. I used to wake up dripping in the summer.

me too - i can't believe that even my beloved mitchum is failing me now......must have been the only person in britain who was glad when the sun went away last week...

kiskideesameanoldmother · 24/05/2008 10:27

yes it does. but it settled down after a few weeks. i think i have read that that milk producing glands are actually specialised sweat glands.
