Is this a lip tie?

My baby is having issues with her latch. HV has advised us to be checked for a lip and tongue tie. I don't think it looks like she has a tongue tie but do you think this could be a lip tie? I'm aware they don't do anything for lip ties though

Is this a lip tie?

It is, but it also looks like her lip goes out nicely regardless. It will only be corrected if it pushes her teeth apart, most children will split their own in childhood!

However we often see lip ties going hand in hand with a tongue tie. We can see if there is an obvious lingual frenulum but a tie can only be identified by a practitioner putting on gloves and feeling inside your baby's mouth to assess the movement of the tongue.

Have you been to a breastfeeding support group (run by IBCLC/breastfeeding specialists, not just health visitors)?

Midwife with specialist breastfeeding support experience. I second the above - you need to find your local breastfeeding support group.

Further to my earlier message.....

I am sending you a link to some good videos. The first video (about nipple pain) is my favourite as it has really good explanation of attachment.

I still believe you should try to find a local breastfeeding support group

You can find your local BFing groups here.

This is a good resource but please check before you go to one. I just looked at the listings locally to me and it is very definitely not up to date, it looks like there are loads but there are actually only about 4 that are active.

I didn’t realise it was out of date, sorry about that. It’s such a shame as it’s previously been a very good resource.

I think because it includes non ABM run groups, it's not their responsibility to update it, and non ABM groups need to get themselves on it, if that makes sense?

Even when I suggest local groups I know are running I usually suggest dropping them a message to check the ones I don't help at, if you're a struggling mum getting up the courage to go it's awful to turn up and find out it isn't on.

We saw the nurse the other day who did our 8 week check who just dismissed it being an issue but we do have a date to visit the local bf support group. Thankyou all

It’s unlikely that the Nurse is trained to assess for TT. Some are but it’s very, very rare.

Yes this is lip tie. Mt daughter has it. She had a big gap in her baby teeth. Her adult teeth did have a gap but her mouths so small the other teeth have pushed it together. She still has it at 12 but never had any issues except latching onto the breast. X
