Child loses the ability to latch on after a certain length of time - question

Was going to name change for this in case I got called a weirdo but I can't be bothered, so I am outing myself.
While feeding DS I had a little suck, out of curiosity and I could get milk out - it wasn't exactly difficult. I'm almost 29 - so just wondering what that means?

Is there such a thing as 'losing the ability' to latch? If you can hand express, and use a machine to express then it can't be that difficult can it?

(Can't reach my own but was big enough to feed DS whilst he was strapped in his car seat and I was wearing seatbelt in middle seat - fab for long journeys! )

Ha I thought I was the only person that had tried this! Didn't get much out, was very disappointed.

The day my milk came in we were ata family function with no pump and a sleepy baby so ended up in agony having DH help me out. He had no problem but it was very odd...

You don't lose the ability to get milk out; you lose the ability to get a proper latch. So if your various DH's were to suckle for half an hour at a time every few hours (a) you would have excruciatingly sore nipples and (b) they wouldn't get as much milk out as a baby would -- in fact probably not enough to effectively feed a baby or keep your supply going. This might also give you blocked ducts if it were the only emptying your breasts were getting.

There are now women all over the nation (and world) now testing the boob to mouth skill...

Haylstones · 22/05/2008 15:56

I can't reach mine. Has anybody else just tried too?
(Tried it theoretically through my t shirt btw)

SPB

Err about Saturday, I'm washing ds's hair...

Just kidding, you haven't scared me off
I can't reach mine, boobs too fat!

Lionstar · 22/05/2008 16:10

I can do it!! (maybe not the place for a smug emoticon though). Must have strechy boobs, though am just about to pick DD up from nursery so am pretty engorged. Still tastes sickly though (have tried before when expressing - out of interest you understand)

Wow the things you try in the name of Mumsnet!

bearmama · 22/05/2008 16:20

I can reach boob to mouth, but havent been able to bring myself to actually put nipple in, too paranoid about giving germs to DD. And not feeling remotely smug, just concerned they'll end up at my knees eventually
