First time formula, up all night

I gave my 3 month old one bottle of formula for the first time yesterday, she's an ineffective feeder and so her BF take over an hour each so I am slowly weaning her onto formula for some feeds to allow us more time for play, naps etc.
She had her first bottle of formula at 6pm taking just 70ml, we paced fed. She seemed fine taking it but come 10pm and she wakes screaming with wind, she has cried all night. Me and my partner have had to take it in turns to sleep or hold her.

Is it the formula that's done this? What have we done wrong?

How much formula have you given her overnight?

caffelattetogo · 05/05/2025 05:37

This is what happened with ours. Midwife said it’s hard for them to digest.

It can take a week or two for their digestive systems to get used to it, is what we were told. We had similar issues for a few days with one bottle a day but are now fine x

Maybe reduce to 35ml tonight and then build back up over time. It does take their stomachs a while to get used to it, but I started combi feeding at that age and it's now grand.

@Overthebow that was all we gave her formula wise, I breast fed overnight.

@caffelattetogo oh that's a relief that it's normal! How long did it last? She seemed so uncomfortable, it was awful.

@Keggles36 thank you, it's so reassuring hearing that other people have had the same issue. I was so worried we were doing something wrong. I'm glad you're out the other side. I hope it doesn't last too long for us either 🤞

@Happyasarainbow thank you! I'll try reducing the amount and try again. I was so ready to give up!
