Can I take these antibiotics while exclusively BF a 3m.o. ?

Please could someone tell me or has someone does this successfully...?

GP just prescribed a course of antibiotics for a suspected low-grade infection. Its called Trimethoprim (200mg, 1 x twice a day). I told him I'm exclusively BF my 3 month old DD and he said its fine. Then I read online that this type of antibiotics is not advised during BF.

What should I believe? DD won't take a bottle, not even EBM.

On the other hand, I do need to treat my symptoms. I'm incredibly exhausted, breathless, low-energy, feel lightheaded/faint and generally unwell. Its getting harder for me to take care of DD alone at home everyday at this rate. My blood presssure has shot up a few times to as high as 115 for the lower number. Blood test was normal for thyroid, glucose, blood count but a bit high for liver enzymes.

Need advice urgently before I go get the pills,
Thank you!

Look it up for yourself, retrodolly. here:

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~mbMLNv:1 and it all looks very reassuring

I just checked the online BNF (pharmaceutical 'bible') and it says that with trimethoprim there can be transference into milk but it isn't known to be harmful.

i'm sure they have retro but have you had your iron levels tested? Is that blood count?

littlepinkpixie · 16/05/2008 20:32

This suggests it is ok

here

The pharmacist should be able to advise you too, when you collect your drugs.

Or here there is a phone number you can call for advice

my ds was v unsettled after i took abs. doc said fine, i later found out not fine! my ds was only 3 days old and was unsettled for two weeks, later found out that my infection would have cleared up without them. Be sure before you start them

Tiktok - Thanks for the link.

Sidge - Thanks for the lookup

Pixie - I consulted the pharmacist (a major London Boots) and he said its safe upto 5 days or short-term use. My presription is for 7 days, I'll ask the GP about it.

Wilfsell - The GP was vague about the results, I'll ask about iron levels, good idea.

Cosima - GP hasn't really verified the infection but it has gone on for a while now

I never thought I'd be so militant about BF! never thought about it before we had a baby and now can't imagine not doing it for as long as I'm able and she wants to
