Cow & Gate Comfort Advice

My 10 week DS was having bad silent reflux symptoms (haven’t yet ruled out CMPA) but was constantly in pain with his tummy, lots of bottom wind, hiccups after every feed, mucusy runny poos but straining and arching like he was constipated - and very phlegmy at night/coughing and choking. Before these symptoms he was happily on SMA Little Steps.

We’re now two days into C&G comfort (as recommended by GP) thought the lower lactose and thicker milk might help but he’s seemingly worse. Terrible wind, poos are thicker and less mucusy but thicker stool to be expected from thicker milk. Still hiccups, sore tummy, knees to chest, and now is sicking clear liquid…

I know it’s been only two days but I’m really struggling giving him milk that he’s so unhappy on.. we saw the HV today and she said give it more time but I’m not sure I can persevere seeing him so sad.

Has anyone had these symptoms and what milk worked for your LO? The GP is calling me in 4 days to discuss how he is and maybe offer prescription formula, but I’m in two minds whether to try maybe another brand first? I heard HiPP organic can be good for sensitive tummies..? Or maybe he does have an intolerance/allergy and we should trial these before another brand? I’m struggling so much seeing him so sad and finding it so hard not to just switch again..

My boy had terrible reflux, it was hell for at least 8 months. I cut out dairy which didn't seen improve at all then I switched to formular beci wasn't coping. Anyway he was under the hospital for the reflux, the dietitian suggested stage one cow and gate with added carobel, was amazing! Better than all the anti reflux or comfort formula because you can play about with your desired thickness. You can get it from pharmacies.

That being said, fast forward to when i introduced cows milk he had a terrible tummy I think he did actually have cmpa which I do feel guilty about.

Lower Lactose doesn’t help CMPA as it’s an allergy to the protein in the milk (lactose is a different part), so you need to go to your GP again or HV and say how upset your child is. It might be worth trying a different one over the weekend, but if you son is so upset, it sounds as it’s not working for him.

can you compare the ingredients? Is there anything else added to the new formula? Like does it have soy or coconut added? Soya allergy can go hand in hand with CMPA as the proteins are similar sizes.

personally I’d try him on neocate or similar, and hold your ground with your GP!

my son’s CMPA symptoms became really severe between 3-4 months, but he was so happy once we’d got on top of his allergies!

good luck, i hope you and him find the solution. There’s a few Facebook groups here which are so useful and this website is useful - https://dilanandme.com/confirm-cmpa/ it’s focused on breastfeeding but does give lots of useful information.

How Do We Know? How To Confirm CMPA

One of the first questions parents ask once a CMPA diagnosis is mentioned is "How do we know for sure?" or "How can we confirm CMPA?" I would love to be able to tell you that there is a very simple test to confirm the allergy but unfortunately it doesn...

@FFitz10 thank you! The little steps like the cow and gate comfort have soy, but C&G has coconut and palm oil, and little steps doesn’t.

its clear that the comfort isn’t agreeing with him.. im considering trying HiPP organic as I’ve seen a lot of good reviews but obviously understanding it won’t help if he has CMPA.

HiPP doesn’t have coconut or soy.. I’m concerned playing around with formula but also can’t bear to give him something that’s causing him to be upset
