BF a toddler and medicine...

My dd is now 2y4m old and still bf about 1-2 times a day. I currently need to take medicine that says it is not meant to be used during pregnancy or bf (but then does say that it can be used, but only if necessary, if pregnant). To what extent do the "not when bf" indications on medicine apply to bf toddlers who only bf a few times a day?

Check with Dr/ pharmacist. Can you say what it is on here?

I BF a toddler when taking meds that said that.

I live in the middle of nowhere and trust mumsnet more than I do the doctors (not a great sign for the doctors). Essentially, they'll more than likely say it is fine. I just wonder if there are any general guidelines. I'm thinking it's fine but wonder if I should stop bf knowing that it will prob mean the end of bf if I do... I'd happily stop bf but dd still likes her boob right before bed. And, we just switched nannies so I don't want to put too many things on her all at once...

I think it really depends on the drug. Can you take it a long time before you need to BF?

What is it - antihistimine? I'm a bit of an expert as I have to take them year round and there are some that you can take and some you can't.

Try asking The BFN

They will know better then a GP I suspect. They have a dedicated helpline for queries about medications.

If you trust MN more than you would a doctor then you need to tell us the name of the med!

Fair enough. Fucanozol (I think, I don't have it with me now). I managed to find a website that listed it as safe. And, I took it right after bf for the night. And will avoid bf if possible tonight. It's a one-off dose (plus one more dose in a week). And it says it can be used for pediatric use on the pamphlet. So, I think all is ok... Still haven't bf since I took it though so will double check with the BFN, thanks stripey.

Tapster, which antihistamines are ok? I sometimes have allergy probs so could help to know if you have a link to a list handy...

The BFN says it's ok too.

DD can have her boobie tonight.
