Having trouble with settling between feeds

DS2 (8 days old and 12lbs) is really screaming the place down although he splutters and spits out my nipple. When he's hungry he guzzles his feed with no problems at all, so I have ruled out hunger.

Last night I tried to calm him for nearly 4 hrs, he suckled a little as if for comfort but just didn't seem hungry. He finally calmed down then lay still but awake. He then farted ALOT and had a poo. Can BF babies be constipated? He was topped up with formula for first 5 days with 1oz twice a day, I stopped this as soon as my milk came in, I only did it as he was such a big baby.

Sorry this post is a bit wordy, I can't think straight!!!

DS(4weeks) gets a bit anxious when he needs to poo, have you tried massaging his belly in a clockwise motion?
IT can help if they have bellyache, as for constipation, I don't know, but DS definitely gets uncomfortable at times and once he has pooed/let his wind out he is much more comfortable and settled, he has been exclusively breastfed as well, so no way it could be anything to do with formula with him.

I tried that for a while, should I do it with his tummy bare or with clothes on? I tried it with clothes on.

DS does seem really settled after pooing, its just the length of time he is upset that is worrying!!

Nosnik, what does the midwife say?

It does sound as if he has some discomfort...though the fact he was calm and then later farted and poo'd doesn't really sit with this.

I am not sure why you have ruled out hunger - sometimes babies get into a state and can't calm down enough to actually feed well. It could be that responding to his very first feeding cues will help with this, so he can come on before he gets into a pickle.

He is v. unlikely to be constipated.

I am not sure if the formula will still be having an effect - 3 days on it should have stopped, surely.

Thats what I thought about the formula tiktok, when he goes calm its as though he is concentrating, its for about 2-3 mins before he poos.

I ruled out hunger cos I fed him till both boobs were dry then fed him some more after an hour which he sicked back up. I then carried on trying to feed him every half hour or so and he cried whilst nipple was in his mouth and kept spitting it out (there was milk there). He then fell asleep as soon as he'd pooed and slept for 5 hrs!!

Have you noticed if it's after anything specific you eat? I ask cos I was just reading this on Kellymom, might be nothing to do with it, but could be related.
