Does anyone else NOT use deodorant whilst breastfeeding?

Out of curiosity.

kateandthegirls, unfortunately, it doesn't have too far at all to migrate to get from my pits to my nipples . Nor do I have the luxury of glowing like a lady, I tend more towards sweating like a pig! Nevertheles, my DD's seem to prefer natural odours to chemicaly manufactured ones.

Levanna, if it had affected my daughter's willingness to breastfeed I would have stopped wearing deodorant immediately. (I also wouldn't have had any friends.)

use a crystal deodorant. totally natural and no breast-cancer causing toxins.

i get mine from local chemist for a fiver. and i've had the same one for a year!

and yes, it is just as effective as the other stuff.

Neil's yard do a nice lemon and corriander deo which is all natural (and it works well too)

My breastfeeding counsellor told me not to use a spray deodorant. She didn't say why. It wasn't a problem as I didn't use chemical deodorants anyway. I've used The Deodorant Stone's natural roll-on for years, thru pg and bfeeding, and it's fine. At least, nobody's told me otherwise!

another vote for deodorant stone- it really works and lasts ages

At first I made my own spray from a natural deodorant recipe I found - did that all during pregnancy then got turned on to the crystal and have used that for almost a year. It works wonderfully.

There were several months though when I was switching from the standard type of deodorant to the natural one that I felt that I smelled quite earthy, to say the least.

ChocolateCath, I can see how if you use a spray deodorant it could end up on your nipple area and potentially cause a problem. Is that what we're talking about here? Does anyone still use a spray deodorant these days anyway? I use a stick and it doesn't go anywhere other than where I put it.

I never thought about it winding up accidentally on my nipples, I just wanted to cleanse my system of the aluminum salts.

we all use mitchum, which is supposed to be better and have no nasties?

I'm sure I read somewhere that although you do get some chemicals in the bm from deodarant (I think you still get it even if you use a roll on) , it is still actually less chemicals then the chemicals you get from using bottles.

It could have been the baby milk site.

I'm using green people 'gentle control' rosemary deodorant at the moment.

Yes, KaTG, IME that's what has happened. Whenever I have made a brief return to deo (roll on or spray) it has prompted a nursing strike, I can only assume it's from either the smell (but I don't go for smelly deo's) or the taste. So, by a process of elimination I had assumed the deo was 'migrating', (in which case DD's would be taking in chemicals), which I would have thought was a fairly rational conclusion to come to. I was genuinely curious as to wether anyone else had come across this or other deo+breastfeeding probs. Or wether others had found it made no difference at all. It's been interesting, I had an old rock crystal thingy knocking around, so I'm thankful for the tips for other good natural deo's, though TBH think I'd still rarely wear it while breastfeeding.
